War Machine

Directed by Patrick Hughes and starring Alan Ritchson, the 2026 film War Machine is a high-octane survival thriller that blends grounded military grit with intense science fiction. Below is a narrative summary of the film’s major plot points.

1. The Ghost of Kandahar

The story opens two years in the past with a harrowing flashback to Afghanistan. Staff Sergeant "81" (Ritchson) and his younger brother (Jai Courtney) are part of a convoy that is brutally ambushed by insurgents. In a display of near-superhuman strength and devotion, 81 carries his mortally wounded brother through miles of hostile territory. Despite his efforts, he collapses just 1.8 kilometers from safety; his brother dies, and 81 is left with a severe knee injury and a crushing "moral injury"—the belief that he failed his only family.

2. The Selection: RASP

In the present day, 81 is on his fifth and final attempt to join the elite 75th Ranger Regiment. To fulfill a pact he made with his brother, he enters the Ranger Assessment and Selection Program (RASP). Stripped of his name and known only by his candidate number, 81, he is a stoic, anti-social powerhouse. His instructors, Sergeant Major Sheridan (Dennis Quaid) and First Sergeant Torres (Esai Morales), worry that his physical excellence masks a fractured mental state, as he refuses to bond with his teammates or acknowledge his PTSD.

3. The "Death March" Simulation

The climax of the training is a 24-hour final exercise known as the "Death March." 81 is reluctantly appointed team leader. The squad is dropped into the remote wilderness with a simple objective: locate a "crashed aircraft," rescue a pilot, and reach the extraction point. As they move, news reports in the background—ignored by the focused soldiers—mention a mysterious celestial object entering Earth's atmosphere and breaking apart.

4. The Encounter

The simulation turns into a nightmare when the squad finds the "crashed aircraft," which is actually an extraterrestrial vanguard machine. When the soldiers accidentally trigger its defense systems, the towering, mechanical hunter awakens. Armed only with training blanks and limited live ammunition, the squad is decimated. The machine uses advanced thermal scanning and kinetic energy weapons that vaporize everything in their path.

5. The Survival Hunt

As the survivors flee, the film shifts into a "Predator-style" hunt. 81 is forced to transition from a lone wolf to a protector. He realizes the machine interferes with their electronics and compasses, using the magnetism to track its proximity. After discovering that their cadre and instructors at the "rebel village" have already been slaughtered, 81 and his second-in-command, 7 (Stephan James), realize this isn't a localized event but the beginning of a global invasion.

6. The Final Stand and the Finish Line

In the final act, 81 lures the machine into a desert construction site. Leveraging his background as a combat engineer, he identifies a vulnrability: the machine must vent heat from its core to cool its weaponry. He executes a "War Genius" trap, clogging the ventilation system with debris, causing the machine to overheat and detonate in a massive fireball.

The film ends with 81 carrying the injured 7 across the literal finish line of the Death March. He is officially pinned as a Ranger, but the victory is bittersweet: the sky is filled with thousands of falling "asteroids," revealing that the war for Earth has only just begun.
