FESTAC ’77 was a defining cultural moment for Africa.

In 1977, Nigeria hosted the Second World Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture in Lagos, uniting 56 nations and nearly 500,000 spectators.

But the momentum didn’t last.

When Nigeria’s capital moved from Lagos to Abuja in 1991, attention and funding shifted. Without sustained use and maintenance, the National Theatre declined.

FESTAC ’77 proved Africa could lead the global cultural conversation. The real question is: why didn’t we continue the movement?
