While the Yoruba culture is known for festivals and vibrant community gatherings as early social events, did you know that for the Igbo and Hausa people, the first social events were closely tied to coronations?

In fact, one of the earliest recorded social events in Hausa history was the coronation of the first king (Sarki).

Here’s the story:
According to the Bayajidda legend, a brave traveler from Baghdad arrived in Daura, where people couldn’t fetch water because a serpent guarded the only well. Bayajidda killed the serpent, and in gratitude, the Queen of Daura (Magajiya Daurama) married him. Their descendants would go on to become the rulers of the Hausa kingdoms. That moment wasn’t just about leadership, it marked a key moment in Hausa identity and community life.

At Trippers, we don’t just explore places, we honor the cultures and stories that shape them. Respect for culture isn’t just a checkbox for us, it’s how we connect people to the richness of each destination, and to each other.

Because when we truly respect where others come from, travel becomes more meaningful.

Did you know this about Igbo history?

While the Yoruba people trace their first major social gathering to Ile-Ife, the Igbo have their own powerful beginning — the Coronation of the First Eze Nri.

This wasn't just a ceremony, it was a moment that shaped a people. Happening around 900 AD (or even earlier), it marked the start of organized leadership in the ancient Nri Kingdom, and it still echoes in Igbo tradition today.

At Trippers, we’re not just about travel and events, we’re about stories, roots, and honoring where we all come from. Culture isn’t just history, it’s living, breathing, and deserves to be respected every step of the way.

Let’s keep exploring and celebrating together.

Did You Know?
Before festivals like Òlójó, the first true social event in Yoruba history was the Gathering at Ilé-Ifẹ̀.

When Odùduwà arrived in Ilé-Ifẹ̀, he didn’t just claim land, he united people. That first gathering wasn’t just about politics; it was a moment of connection, culture, and celebration. Music, dance, and unity filled the air as different groups came together for the first time.

While coronations and festivals later became more elaborate, this gathering laid the foundation for Yoruba social life.

At Trippers, we believe in honoring these roots because the past deserves a seat at the table as we embrace the present.
