Meet Themba Sibeko (Themba Sibeko).

Ahead of FNB Art Joburg 2026, we take a closer look at the Johannesburg-based artist behind Symphony of Dreams, a new body of work presented by Wunika Mukan Gallery.

Through the visual language of ballet, Sibeko turns his attention to the journey of the dreamer—the discipline, uncertainty, persistence, and moments of becoming that exist long before achievement becomes visible.

For Sibeko, a dream is never a straight line. Like a symphony, it moves through different rhythms: moments of harmony and dissonance, pauses and crescendos, setbacks and breakthroughs.

We’re pleased to announce our participation in the 19th edition of FNB Art Joburg, where we will present the work of South African artist Themba Sibeko in the gallery LAB section.

For the fair, Sibeko presents Symphony of Dreams, a new body of work that considers the pursuit of dreams through the language of ballet.

Drawing on the discipline, vulnerability, perseverance, and beauty embodied by the dancer, Sibeko reflects on the many stages of becoming; from preparation and uncertainty to setbacks, persistence, and eventual arrival.

Through his figures, Sibeko invites us to look beyond the performance and consider the journey behind it: the quiet rehearsal, the waiting, the setbacks, the persistence, and ultimately, the moment when the dream begins to take shape.

We caught up with Blossom Oyeyipo (Blossom Oyeyipo) to hear what’s been taking shape in the studio.

This year, her practice has moved deeper into Irin’s Garden of Dreams, following the figures that inhabit this imagined world and exploring dream architecture, symbolism, and transformation.

At the centre of this new exploration is the cocoon, not as shelter, but as a self-woven vessel and a mechanism for becoming.

“In Irin’s world, the cocoon isn’t shelter, it’s a self-woven vessel, a shapeshifting mechanism that lets her move from one state to another as she needs to, an incubator for whatever she’s becoming next.”

“In Woman with Swans”, Soares brings together imagined scenarios and fragments from her wider practice, allowing familiar lines, forms, and ideas to come together in a new composition. As she describes it, “each line carries fragments of other paintings, creating something new from what has already been.”

On view as part of Sanctuaries of Self, Ime Obi (2026) by Nduka Ikechukwu reflects on the foundations that shape who we become.

Drawing from Igbo understandings of family and ancestry, the work considers the home as the first place where identity is formed, through care, guidance, memory, and shared responsibility. Its woven forms speak to the interconnected relationships that sustain us, reminding us that personal growth is never achieved alone, but built upon the lives and sacrifices of those who came before.
