During ART X Lagos 2025, the artists selected for the fifth iteration of Art Across Borders (AAB): Kudzanai Chiurai, Fatoumata Diabaté (), Edson Chagas (), Nicène Kossentini, Mário Macilau, and Camille Chedda (), took part in a mini-residency that unfolded across Lagos.

Over several days, they moved through studios, museums, and everyday spaces, engaging the city as both context and collaborator. Through conversation and encounters, they navigated the city and shared reflections on place, perception, and belonging in line with the AAB exhibition theme, “We Are Where We Think, (We Are).”

With visits to cultural institutions like Centre for Black and African Arts and Civilization, one-on-one studio engagements with legendary artist, Pa Bruce Onobrakpeya, open market explorations and more, the mini-residency positioned our Lagos as a site of learning and imagination.

At its core, Art Across Borders is a movement — across regions, ideas, and lived realities — where artists reclaim place, assert agency, and collectively imagine futures yet to be formed.
Art Across Borders in partnership with through the patronage of the Afreximbank Art Program, is curated by Jumoke Sanwo (tagged).

Moments from ART X Lagos 2025.

Between the artworks, it was the people—the conversations, the connections, the way the fair was experienced—that brought the fair to life.

“He worked like someone racing against time.” - Amaize Ojeikere on his father, photographer J.D. ‘Okhai Ojeikere.

At ART X Lagos 2025, photographer and archivist Amaize Ojeikere reflected on the practice of his father, J.D. ‘Okhai’ Ojeikere, during Sight / Site: Shaping an Iconic Vision — a conversation on the legacy of the legendary figure that anchored our 2025 ART X ICON Exhibition.

Moderated by Missla Libsekal (), the talk explored a photographer who understood his tools and anticipated each image long before the shutter clicked.

To end Women’s Month, we’re spotlighting our visit to She-nergy II at Alliance Française Lagos (.lagos), an exhibition that continues to centre and amplify the voices of emerging women artists within the contemporary landscape.

Bringing together works by Yewande Ambeke (), Titilayo Abdulrazaq (), Falilat Ibrahim (), Chinecherem Peace Ifedilichukwu (), Nengi Uranta (), Ashiata Shaibu (), Taiwo Aiyedogbon (), Korede Aremo (), Lilian Amaghiro (), and Caroline Useh (), the exhibition explored the nuances of womanhood through diverse mediums and visual languages—each work contributing to an evolving dialogue on identity, representation, and social transformation.

Moving beyond observation, She-nergy II reflected the power of the female gaze as an active force that shapes narratives, builds community, and reimagines possibilities for the future.

In this video, RESONANCE laureate, Mobolaji Ogunrosoye, reflects on her ongoing project Contrasting Loveliness, where self-portraiture becomes a way of examining the contradictions that shape womanhood.

Working across collage and photography, the Lagos-based artist explores perception through distortion—manipulating paper, lenses, and layered imagery to reveal the many ways women are seen, and see themselves.

Through material experimentation, her practice embraces the unexpected - finding beauty in disruption, and meaning in the act of “making a mess”.

Filmed during the residency in Paris, organised by ART X Lagos, Cité internationale des arts () and the French Embassy in Nigeria (), Mobolaji also shares how the experience offered time for reflection, experimentation, and renewed clarity.

We were in Nairobi and visited Nairobi Contemporary Art Institute () to experience the exhibition, ‘Michael Armitage, Maria Lassnig, Chelenge Van Rampelberg’, bringing together works by Michael Armitage (), Maria Lassnig (), and Chelenge Van Rampelberg ().

The exhibition considered the body as a site of belonging, relationship, and vulnerability—opening a cross-generational dialogue between distinct artistic practices.

Curated by Don Handa (.for.dom), the exhibition remains on view at NCAI until 5 April.

“You need to develop and harness your local voice before venturing into the international art scene.”

Curator and RESONANCE laureate Anthony Ogochukwu Agbapuonwu reflects on research, representation, and what it means to think of people as infrastructure.

Filmed during his residency in Paris, realised in partnership with Cité internationale des arts () and the French Embassy in Nigeria (), Anthony speaks about a curatorial practice shaped by family, heritage, indigenous knowledge systems, and the shifting realities of African cities.

Watch the full conversation on YouTube, where he expands on his research, community engagements, and advice for emerging curators developing their voices at home and abroad.

At 10X, the tenth edition of ART X Lagos, guests stepped into the Portraits of Modernity photobooth and became part of a living archive.

Inspired by the visual language and studio practice of J.D. ’Okhai Ojeikere—the ART X ICON Exhibition anchor, the photobooth resembled a 1960s Lagosian garden featuring the striking Patewo chair from Salu Iwadi Studios (tagged), which, like Ojeikere’s work, celebrates the sculptural beauty of Nigerian hairstyles.

These portraits captured by photographer, John Peter Chukwu and curated by Fikayo Adebajo, positioned you, our guests, as co-authors of a new archive—taken home as Polaroids, and carried forward as part of the wider story of ART X Lagos.

From our earliest days, we set out to do something bold: to place Lagos firmly on the global arts and culture calendar, and to build lasting bridges between Nigeria, Africa, and the world.

A decade in, we are still celebrating that vision and everything it has grown into.

What began as conviction and imagination has become an institution: one that has helped shape Nigeria’s creative ecosystem, influenced global cultural conversations, and redefined what is possible for African creativity at scale.

As reflected by voices from across the world’s leading platforms, ART X Lagos has been more than an art fair. It’s been a meeting point, a catalyst, and a cultural force sustained by a community that believes in the power of art to move cities, histories, and futures forward.

A decade in, the dream is not only alive - it is still unfolding.
