A painting I carried with me for years, through every move, every phase.

I completed her a year ago, and sincerely, she holds one of my deepest memories from The Powerful XX series.

Maybe one day, I’ll tell you all about it.

“It is well” (25’)

I made this painting to show how a life can be shaped by things outside of one’s control.

Many Nigerian graduates go through the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), serving a country they believe in.

At the end of that year, they carry hope that the country will serve them too.

But reality often interrupts.

This is for the accountant I met in the market, now selling tripods.
For the architecture graduate working as a waiter.

It is painful. It is unfair. But somehow, survival continues.

I called it “It is well” because that is what we say when we have taken in the weight of a situation and chosen to endure it, even when nothing is truly well.

It is not peace.
It is endurance.

There is pain here.
There is also strength.

Hopefully, we don’t lose ourselves.
Because truly; external restraint is a factor but internal restraint will be the end of that tunnel.

An Open Letter to

Dear Odeluwa,

You have been on my mind more than you know.

When news of your loss reached me, it did not feel like information. It felt like something that quietly sat in the chest. A pause that lingered.

I keep wondering how you are. Truly.

I do not know how you wake up each day, or what grief has asked of you. I imagine it must be heavy. And in that heaviness, I hope you are not alone.

Today, I simply want you to know that you are seen. Not as an icon or a literary force, but as a mother. As a woman. As a heart that has loved deeply.

I sincerely hope love is holding you in ways words cannot. I hope that even in the quiet, there are moments of warmth that remind you light still exists.

I do not have the right words. I only have care.
