Wahala !

Ooni’s ex-wife, others face probe as 32 children feared k!lled at Ibadan fun fair.

The Oyo State Police Command says it is investigating the circumstances surrounding the alleged dÂŁath of 32 children during a stampede at a funfair in Ibadan, the state capital, on Wednesday.

PUNCH Metro gathered from multiple eyewitness accounts that the stampede occurred when participants rushed to gain access to the venue of the event reportedly organised by the ex-queen of the Ooni of Ife, Prophetess Naomi Shikemi, and an Ibadan-based broadcaster, Oriyomi Hamzat.

Investigations by PUNCH Metro also showed that the victims were stampÂŁded to dÂŁath while trying to break through the main gate of the school.

It was further gathered that provision was made for 5,000 children but the number that turned up for the event was reportedly over 7, 500.

Narrating the scenario in a video, an eyewitness at the scene of the incident, who did not mention her name, noted that the organisers had invited 5,000 participants for the funfair but the situation got out of control when the scene became rowdy leading to a stampÂŁde that led to several casualties.

Another participant claimed he lost a child during the incident.

Multiple sources told our correspondents that some of the children, including their parents, were said to have kept vigil at the venue of the event.

One of our correspondents observed that an uncontrollable crowd caused gridlock on the Basorun-Idi Ape Road.

An Administrative Officer of Patnas Hospital, Basorun, where some of the victims were admitted, Olufeyemi Tolulope, said, “The affected children were brought in some minutes past 8am. Six children were brought into the hospital out of which five d!ed while the other one is recuperating.

One of the parents of the deceased, who was sighted at the hospital premises wailing, said, “I did not bargain for what happened to me. We slept together at home yesterday (Tuesday) not knowing that it would be the last time. My daughter is not d£ad. Please doctor wake her up.”

D'ÒGỌ̀ ỌKỌ AJIGBÈSẸ̀

In the olden days, Yorùbá people have a legal system of forcing payment out of debtors. When the creditor has exhausted all effort to recover the debt, he would hire a professional called "Ògọ̀" (debt destrainor). The job of the ògọ̀ is to "d'ògọ̀ ti ajigbèsè" (sit on the debtor's neck). The Ògò are recognised or licensed by the King and as such they do the meanest things to recover the debt.

The Ògò will move into the debtor's home and makes himself intolerable, he would make himself a nuisance in the house, he would adopt any measure he desire to inflict his presence and attention on the debtor, he would follow the debtor everywhere and anywhere he may go, he may decide to shout at the debtor - "ará àdúgbò e wà wọ ajigbèsè ooo" (everybody come and see a debtor!!!), "ajibèsè!!!", such are the foul words of the debt destrainor, they are men with even-temper but yet mannerless and disrespective. And being a recognised and 'licensed' professional touching or hurting him implies an attack on the creditor and thus it's a crime to hurt the debt destrainor.

It is said that the debt destrainor is permitted to eat and drink anything he desire, all at the expense of the debtor, he may slaughter a chicken, goat etc for himself, though he is not allowed to take anything away but he must enjoy himself and make use of anything in the debtors home. He goes on this way until the debtor finds a way to get rid of him by paying the debt.
