The kingdom of Igboria was known across distant lands for its wealth, mighty warriors, and a king whose courage had never been questioned.
King Adekan was young, wise, and respected.
Kings from neighboring kingdoms sought his friendship.
Villagers believed that as long as he sat on the throne, peace would never leave the land.
Yet there was one mystery no one dared to speak about after sunset.
Deep inside the Sacred Emerald Forest stood an ancient lake covered in white mist.
The elders warned everyone never to go there.
"It is a place where promises are tested," they always said.
Many laughed at the warning.
Those who ignored it... never returned with the same story.
One evening, while chasing a wounded antelope during a royal hunt, King Adekan became separated from his soldiers.
Dark clouds covered the sky.
His horse refused to move forward.
Then...
He heard a soft voice singing.
It was the most beautiful voice he had ever heard.
Curious, the king followed the sound until he reached the mysterious lake.
There, sitting on a smooth rock beside the water, was a young woman dressed in shimmering green clothing.
Her long dark hair flowed like silk.
Her eyes sparkled like emeralds.
She looked lonely.
The king had never seen anyone so graceful.
"Who are you?" he asked gently.
The young woman smiled.
"My name is Nkem."
"You shouldn't be here," she added.
The king laughed.
"I fear no forest."
She looked into his eyes for a long moment.
"Sometimes," she whispered, "the greatest danger wears the kindest smile."
Before the king could ask another question, the wind suddenly grew stronger.
The lake began to ripple.
For just a single heartbeat...
The king thought he saw something unusual near the water.
It looked like a long, shining serpent disappearing beneath the surface.
He blinked.
Everything looked normal again.
"Did I imagine that?" he wondered.
