Over 100 People Killed in Accidental Nigerian Military Airstrike in Yobe
More than 100 people were reported killed after a mistaken airstrike by the Nigerian military hit civilians in Yobe State, northeastern Nigeria.
The incident occurred at a weekly market in Jilli village, located near the border between Yobe and Borno states. The victims were mostly traders and local residents who had gathered for business activities.
According to reports, Nigerian Air Force jets were targeting suspected Boko Haram fighters in the area. However, the operation went wrong, and the bombs were dropped on civilians instead.
Eyewitnesses said the attack happened in the afternoon while the market was busy. Many people were killed instantly, while others were injured and rushed to nearby hospitals in Geidam and Damaturu.
Local officials confirmed the incident and said the number of casualties could be higher, as rescue efforts continued and more bodies were being recovered.
The Nigerian military stated that the airstrike was aimed at terrorists but did not immediately confirm that civilians were hit. However, residents and local authorities insist that the victims were innocent civilians.
This tragic event has raised concerns about mistaken military operations and civilian safety in areas affected by insurgency in northeastern Nigeria.
