What we do
Our arts programmes are underpinned by research, focused on young people (18 – 35-year olds), and committed to:

Supporting the creation of new art and sharing this art to audiences both online and in person. Sharing skills and knowledge between creative communities in West Africa and the UK
Creating new connections between young people in West Africa and the UK. Our pr

ogrammes are delivered by partners (artists, arts professionals, arts organisations, collectives, hubs) who have the vision and understanding of their creative communities and are best placed to lead and tell the stories of their art sectors. With our partners, we stimulate new ways of connecting with and understanding each other through the arts. Through activities in Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone and the UK

What happens when artists shape the future of technology?

Why Technology Needs Artists brings together visionary creatives from Africa and the UK to reflect on the powerful role artists play in shaping innovation, digital transformation, and the technologies that increasingly define our world. Drawing on insights from the British Council report Why Technology Needs Artists, the conversation explores how creative thinking challenges conventional systems, asks critical questions, and opens new possibilities for more human-centred technological futures.

From digital aesthetics to environmental consciousness and new models of creative production, artists continue to push the boundaries of how technology is imagined and used. Their perspectives remind us that innovation is not only about engineering solutions, but also about imagination, ethics, and cultural insight.

Watch the discussion and explore why creativity is essential to building more inclusive, thoughtful, and sustainable digital futures.

The British Council was honoured to participate in the Creative Ministers’ Bilateral Dialogue at Lancaster House, bringing together UK Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) Minister Rt Hon Ian Murray and Nigeria’s Federal Minister Hannatu Musa Musawa. With Nigeria identified as a priority growth market in the UK’s Creative Industries Sector Plan, the discussion focused on advancing the UK–Nigeria Enhanced Trade and Investment Partnership Creative Pillar, unlocking growth, addressing barriers, and strengthening collaboration across the sector.
The dialogue also underscored the power of cultural and sporting connections in deepening partnerships, engaging young people, and driving a more globally competitive creative economy.

What does it mean to design for a future that is both creative and sustainable?

At ‘A Seat at the Table of Change’, artists, designers, technologists and cultural leaders came together to explore how creativity can respond to some of the most urgent questions of our time. From circular fashion and environmentally conscious design to the evolving role of digital aesthetics, the discussion examined how creative practice can move beyond expression to become a driver of responsible change.

Across the conversation, one idea stood out: sustainability in the creative industries is not only about materials or production processes. It is also about mindset, how we design systems, rethink value, and imagine new ways for culture, technology and the environment to coexist.

As the creative economy continues to grow, these conversations matter more than ever. They challenge us to reconsider how things are made, how stories are told, and how creativity can contribute to a more sustainable world.

Watch the highlights and join the conversation:
Why is sustainability important and what mean in your creative practice?
