Oyo Teachers Declare Indefinite Strike Over Abducted Students

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has announced an indefinite strike in Oyo State following the continued captivity of teachers and students abducted in Oriire Local Government Area.

Beginning Monday, June 1, 2026, all primary and secondary school teachers across the state are directed to suspend academic activities until the victims are released unconditionally.

In solidarity, NUT chapters nationwide will hold rallies on Tuesday, June 2, culminating in protests at Government Houses across the country.

The decision was conveyed in a joint statement signed by NUT National President, Comrade Audu Titus Amba, and Secretary General, Dr. Clinton J. Ikpitibo. The union expressed grave concern over the deteriorating condition of the victims, who have remained in captivity since May 15, despite repeated appeals to authorities and security agencies.

Reports suggesting that some victims may have died in captivity, alongside distressing videos allegedly released from the kidnappers’ den, have heightened tension. In one video, an abducted school principal and teacher pleaded for urgent intervention from the Federal Government, the Oyo State Government, and the public.

According to the NUT, the trauma endured by the victims, their families, and the education sector necessitated the strike. The union emphasized that schools, teachers, and students must never be left vulnerable to criminal attacks, urging immediate action from relevant authorities.

The statement concluded that education cannot thrive under fear and insecurity, vowing to sustain lawful pressure until all abducted victims regain their freedom.

A Lady’s Painful Story of Betrayal and Hardship

“This is a photo of me during the years I was mentally unstable.

I lived with this condition for ten years. I got married at 21, and one night my husband told me about a pastor who used to pray for him. He said I should come along. Trusting him, I followed.

When we arrived, the pastor wore a red robe. He told me my husband was destined for greatness, but that there was a price to pay. He said I needed to pray like a virtuous woman, and I agreed — anything to help my husband succeed.

On the third day, the pastor told me that for my husband to become rich, I would have to run mad for seven years. At first, I refused, but later I thought it was better than him doing rituals. So I agreed. This was in 2016.

By 2019, I found myself in a church where they cared for me. I returned home and saw my husband asleep. He was shocked to see me, but reminded me of our agreement — that he would check on me and feed me. He took me back to the baba, who said the three years were wasted and made me run mad for another seven years.

Now it is 2026, and I have finally recovered. I went back to where we lived, but my husband was gone. I had no phone, no belongings. I searched for the baba, only to learn he was dead, and his children claimed they knew nothing of my case.

Eventually, I found my husband through neighbors. He had remarried, was wealthy, with a house and a car. He told me my madness was not what made him rich.

I am now 31, and people show me videos of myself during those years. I feel deceived. I don’t know if the Nigerian authorities can help me, but I will report him everywhere. I will sue him because he betrayed and abandoned me.”

Makinde: “Governors Lack Real Power on Security Until Presidency Grants It”

Governor Seyi Makinde has told parents in Oyo State that he cannot directly resolve the rising cases of kidnappings and abductions until he becomes president in 2027. Speaking in Ibadan after accepting the presidential nomination of the African People’s Movement, Makinde stressed that governors are wrongly labeled “Chief Security Officers” despite having no constitutional authority over security agencies.

“Innocent schoolchildren and citizens remain in captivity today. As governor, I carry the burden of responsibility without the authority to act. No leader should be held accountable for security when the tools to enforce it are beyond their reach,” he said.

Makinde pledged that if elected president, he would restructure Nigeria’s security system to give states greater powers to respond to threats. “Decentralisation is essential for effective security management. Under my leadership, the safety of Nigerians will never be reduced to a political slogan,” he declared.

His remarks have triggered outrage among parents of the 46 abducted pupils and teachers from the Oriire school attack, who question why they must wait until 2027 for decisive action while their children remain in captivity.
