Oyo Teachers Declare Indefinite Strike Over Abducted Students
The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has announced an indefinite strike in Oyo State following the continued captivity of teachers and students abducted in Oriire Local Government Area.
Beginning Monday, June 1, 2026, all primary and secondary school teachers across the state are directed to suspend academic activities until the victims are released unconditionally.
In solidarity, NUT chapters nationwide will hold rallies on Tuesday, June 2, culminating in protests at Government Houses across the country.
The decision was conveyed in a joint statement signed by NUT National President, Comrade Audu Titus Amba, and Secretary General, Dr. Clinton J. Ikpitibo. The union expressed grave concern over the deteriorating condition of the victims, who have remained in captivity since May 15, despite repeated appeals to authorities and security agencies.
Reports suggesting that some victims may have died in captivity, alongside distressing videos allegedly released from the kidnappers’ den, have heightened tension. In one video, an abducted school principal and teacher pleaded for urgent intervention from the Federal Government, the Oyo State Government, and the public.
According to the NUT, the trauma endured by the victims, their families, and the education sector necessitated the strike. The union emphasized that schools, teachers, and students must never be left vulnerable to criminal attacks, urging immediate action from relevant authorities.
The statement concluded that education cannot thrive under fear and insecurity, vowing to sustain lawful pressure until all abducted victims regain their freedom.
