President Bola Tinubu has conferred the national honour of Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON) on Lebanese businessman and diplomat, Ambassador Gilbert Chagoury.

The honour was announced in an official instrument signed by the President, citing his constitutional powers under the National Honours Act. According to the document, the award was given in recognition of Chagoury’s personal qualities and contributions to Nigeria.

The instrument stated that the conferment was made under Section 1(4) of the Act and was officially issued in Abuja on January 8, 2026, under the public seal of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Ambassador Chagoury has, in the past, been linked to public discussions and allegations concerning government contracts. Media reports previously noted that ITB Nigeria, a construction company associated with him, was awarded a $700 million contract for the renovation of Tin Can and Apapa Ports in Lagos, a decision that generated public debate.

The contract approval, which reportedly went through the Federal Executive Council, sparked discussions regarding experience requirements and transparency in public procurement.
