EPU VOWS COMMITMENT TO RIGHTS PROTECTION, SEEKS FREEDOM FOR PRINCESS UDOITO
..Chief Nduese Essien, Sen. Helen Esuene, ors, call for modification of the bride price, marriage and burial list

Ekid People’s Union (EPU) has assured that despite the turbulent experiences that have befallen the union, it will remain unwavering in the pursuit of the community’s interests and protecting its historical rights and assets.

The Union states this during the quarterly congress held yesterday, 28th May, 2026, at the Union’s Secretariat, Ikot Ibiok, Eket.

Addressing the congress, President General of EPU, Dr. Samuel Udonsak, said the meeting provided an opportunity to “reflect deeply on the turbulent period of January to May 2026” and fashion strategies for sustaining the Union and the collective interest of Ekid people.

Dr. Udonsak opened with the announcement of the death of Obong Iwaad Emmanuel Mbong, whom he described as “an active member of the Union, an active politician, and a foremost community leader endowed with the natural talent of mobilising youths for peace and progress.” Congress observed a minute of silence in honour of the late Mbong and other departed faithfuls.

On the advocacy over the Stubbs Creek Forest Reserve, SCFR, the President General recalled that after the Union issued a Caveat Emptor as approved at the 2025 Annual Congress, the Union and its leadership were “immediately targeted.” He expressed gratitude for the intervention of senior political and community leaders, which brought respite to the union's leadership.

However, Dr. Udonsak lamented that the respite did not extend to Princess Godsown Udoito, who was arrested on January 13, 2026, and has since been remanded at the Uyo Correctional Centre. “Her bail application was declined, and the subsequent appeal and the substantive case are now ongoing. Since this matter is before the court of law, we shall restrict our comments and trust that justice will be done,” he stated.

The union saluted individuals and institutions working for her release, expressing confidence that “by the grace of God, she will be free soon.” Dr. Udonsak also acknowledged those who had apologised on her behalf, pleading for her unconditional release.

Speaking further, the EPU President General admitted that Governor Umo Eno, his family, and loyalists were “deeply hurt by the style and tone of our advocacy.” He added, “I have admitted privately and now publicly, how sincerely we regret the hurt they are passing through. It was in admission of this and to pave the way for dialogue that the Union completely deescalated its advocacy.”

Despite what he termed “intense and persistent provocation” by Ibeno neighbours, Dr. Udonsak said the Union had remained quiet and urged the meeting to “resolve to continue to pray; to persist with mediation, until this cup passes us by and our Princess is free.”

Reviewing activities of Ibeno neighbours dating back to the 1918 Privy Council judgment on Akoiyak, the Union alleged ongoing attempts to “dispose us of Akoiyak - our God-given inheritance.” Dr. Udonsak cited recent examples, including alleged attempts to change the names of Eket and Esit Eket LGAs, challenge the official map of Akwa Ibom State, and “even attempt to take our land to create Obollo State.”

He further accused the Ibeno Host Community Development Trust of printing exercise books listing Ekid villages as Ibeno villages and building a civic center at Esuk Ikim, an Ekid village, and labeling it Ibeno. “All to mutilate our claims on Akoiyak Ekid, as part of a well-defined and sustained template by Ibeno to take away our inheritance,” he said.

According to him, this situation gave birth to the Doctrine of Necessity, DON, which he described as “a potent survival strategy not to empower our adversaries.” He maintained that "the DON has been well received and urged the congress to sustain it until our survival and inheritance are no longer threatened.”

On infrastructure, Dr. Udonsak disclosed that the Union has drawings of the Coastal Road alignment, confirming it passes deep in our territory and not through Akoiyak Ekid. He commended Governor Umo Eno for the planned award of the Nnung Udoe - Okposo Road and appealed for construction of the 8km Edo - Ndito Eka Iba Road to complement it.

The Union also welcomed Senate President Godswill Akpabio’s declaration on the delineation of new state constituencies, calling for the creation of Eket North and Eket South state constituencies based on 2023 voter population figures, with Esit-Eket in consideration.

The congress further deliberated on the need for traditional rulers to give effect to modifications on marriage and funeral rites, an initiative they reportedly began.

The Chairman of the Board of Trustees of EPU, Rt. Hon. Chief Nduese Essien, noted that, "it is the responsibility of the traditional rulers to regulate these practices as they are more familiar with the traditions.

He commended the communities of Ekid Nation for their interests in community affairs while thanking the Union for the revival of the community spirit.

Essien, who pleaded for the spirit to be sustained, frowned at the recent political events, noting that, "we have continued to condone ill-doings, and we need to do something about it".

Also, speaking Senator (Archbishop) Helen Esuene, lauded the initiative of adjusting the marriage list, bride price, and funeral rites, urging communities to embrace the opportunity.

Esuene decried the weight of burden these lists have brought on many families, adding that, it is a serious barrier to families and young people intending to marry.

Member of the BOT, Prof. Des Wilson, President of Afigh Iwaad Ekid, Capt. Willie Mbong, Pastor Isaiah Abia in their remarks charged Ekid people to stay the course, take necessary actions that aligns with the community's interests.

In his remarks, the Secretary General of the Union, Barr. Bassey Dan Abia, KJW, who explained the Doctrine of Necessity, said, it is a position of self-determination, assuring that, "we will see it through and other issues raised in the congress, we will work to bring them to the shores of success".

The Ekid Peoples Union (EPU) has reaffirmed its resolve to defend the ancestral heritage, land rights and political interest of the Ekid nation through lawful and peaceful means.

The President General of EPU, Dr Samuel Udonsak, stated this at the union’s general meeting held on Thursday at the EPU Secretariat in Eket.

Udonsak said the meeting was convened to review developments affecting the Ekid people between January and May 2026 and to strengthen strategies for protecting the collective interest of the nation.

He announced the death of Obong Iwaad Emmanuel Mbong, whom he described as an active member of the union, politician and community leader committed to youth mobilisation, peace and progress.

The EPU president said the union’s advocacy over its rights in the Stubbs Creek Forest Reserve reached a critical stage after its 2025 Annual Congress, leading to the issuance of a Caveat Emptor on the reserve.

He said the development led to pressure on the union and its leadership, adding that intervention by senior political and community leaders brought some relief.

Dr Udonsak, however, lamented the continued detention of Princess God’sown Udoito, who he said was arrested on Jan. 13, 2026, and had since been remanded at the Uyo Correctional Centre.

He said her bail application had been declined, despite the fact that her purported offense is bailable, while the appeal and substantive case were ongoing.

“Since this matter is before the court of law, we shall restrict our comments and trust that justice will be done,” he said.

Udonsak commended individuals and institutions working for her release and urged Ekid people to remain prayerful, peaceful and committed to mediation.

He also expressed regret over the hurt caused to Gov. Umo Eno, his family and supporters by the style and tone of the union’s advocacy, saying the union had de-escalated its actions to create room for dialogue.

On land matters, Udonsak accused Ibeno interests of sustaining attempts to undermine Ekid claims over Akoiyak Ekid, including alleged efforts to rename communities, challenge official maps and identify Ekid villages as Ibeno villages.

He said the union’s Doctrine of Necessity remained a survival strategy aimed at protecting Ekid inheritance for future generations.

The EPU president commended Gov. Eno for his vision on roads, and the proposed Nnung Udoe–Okposo Road, describing them as projects capable of opening up the blue economy.

He appealed for the construction of the eight-kilometre Edo–Ndito Eka Iba Road to complement the development and the Coastal Highway.

Udonsak also welcomed the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio’s declaration on the delineation of new State constituencies in Akwa Ibom, calling for the creation of Eket North and Eket South State Constituencies.

He said Eket Local Government Area had the voter and population strength to qualify for two state constituencies in line with INEC guidelines.

The union also urged traditional rulers to give effect to earlier deliberations on marriage and funeral rites.

Dr Udonsak called on Ekid people to remain united, peaceful and steadfast in defence of their identity, heritage and future.

EKID FORUM RAISES ALARM OVER CONTROVERSIAL EXERCISE BOOKS, URGES GOVT, DSS TO ACT.

By Assam Abia.

The Ekid Progressive Forum has called on the Akwa Ibom State Government and security agencies to urgently intervene in a growing dispute between Ekid Nation and Ibeno Local Government Area over the circulation of controversial exercise books.

In a press release signed by Barrister Aniekan Jacob, national president, the Forum alleged that the Ibeno Host Community Development Trust (HCDT), headed by Mr. Sam Ekpeyong, recently printed and distributed thousands of exercise books listing Ekid villages as part of Ibeno LGA.

The Forum described the action as a deliberate attempt to provoke tension and distort the identity of communities located within Eket and Esit Eket Local Government Areas.

It warned that the development could escalate into a breakdown of peace if not addressed promptly.

According to the statement, Ekid Nation has, over the years, made efforts to maintain peaceful relations with Ibeno, but alleged repeated actions capable of creating tension.

The Forum further linked the development to past political events, recalling that the current member representing Eket, Onna, Esit Eket and Ibeno Federal Constituency, Hon. Opolupum Etteh, had in 2023 presented a bill seeking to rename Eket and Esit Eket LGAs with Obolo identities during the constitutional amendment process.

It said the move, which later became public during plenary, was rejected by Ekid stakeholders after the lawmaker failed to provide satisfactory explanations.

Following the incident, the Forum said Ekid leaders adopted a resolution known as the “Doctrine of Necessity,” rejecting support for any Ibeno candidate in future elections.

It noted that the decision also affects the 2027 House of Representatives ambition of Mrs. Eunice Thomas, wife of Mr. Ekpeyong.

The Forum alleged that listing Ekid villages in the exercise books was an attempt to condition young minds to believe the communities belong to Ibeno, describing it as provocative and unacceptable.

"It should be noted clearly that Sam Ekpenyong whose wife now wants to be the Member of the Federal House of Representatives is responsible for this faux pass how can Ekid people be cajoled to vote for her", the release queried, adding that "On the Doctrine of Necessity we stand".

It called on the state government to direct the immediate withdrawal of the materials from circulation to prevent escalation of tension.

The Forum also urged the State Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs to publish an official list of villages in Ekid Nation and Ibeno LGA for proper documentation.

It further called on the Department of State Services (DSS) to investigate the matter and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.

The Forum reiterated its commitment to peace but warned that any action capable of undermining the identity and territorial integrity of Ekid communities would be resisted.

Your Aspiration Fits Into 'The Doctrine Of Necessity' - EPU Tells Dr. Judith Etuk-Ogbara

As the race for the House of Representative, Eket Federal Constituency gains momentum, the Ekid Peoples’ Union, (EPU), has hinted that, the aspiration of Dr. Judith Etuk-Ogbara “fits into the doctrine of necessity”.

The position was made known on Friday, 1st May, 2026, during the consultation visit of Dr. Mrs. Judith Etuk-Ogbara to EPU executives at the residence of the President General Dr. Samuel Udonsak, 82 Afaha Eket Road Eket.

Speaking on behalf of the Union, EPU, President General, Dr. Samuel Udonsak, clarified that, the Union is not a political party, "the Union has no hands with the activities of the party and the endorsement".

According to the President General, "the Doctrine of Necessity is not in conflict with the parties' endorsement. The endorsements will only make the doctrine of necessity rest in the conscience of those doing them".

He explained that it was not for individuals, but it was directed at the political parties. "We will wait for the parties to conduct their primaries and then we know how many Ekid sons and daughters have emerged on different party platforms".

"If more Ekid people are favoured, we will sit down and know how to measure the bearings of the position", He hinted.

Dr. Udonsak revealed that, the doctrine of necessity is sacrosanct. It was well researched, well consulted even beyond Ekid. It is not personal and whoever says it is personal, I rest it on his conscience".

"Your aspiration matches the Doctrine of Necessity. I know your hands are clean and I hope God will see you through. I look forward to seeing you with the party's ticket", the President General said.

Udonsak vowing to stand by the position, warned against division. "Ekid should learn to speak with one voice. If this is going to be our learning curve, so be it".

In her presentation, the House of Representative Hopeful, Dr. Mrs. Judith Mayen Etuk-Ogbara, said that her representation aimed at promoting peace, loyalty, and service to the people of Eket Federal Constituency.

She thanked the President General and his executive members for the audience and described him as a man of integrity.

Dr. Etuk noted that, her representation will take after the leadership of Pastor Umo Eno seeking for peace in the community. “I will be suing for peace because that is what I have come to know Akwa Ibom for, that is what our Governor preaches and I will preach peace as well. We have to find a way to exist without robbing each other of what is rightfully ours".

She underscored her ability to bring peace in Eket Federal Constituency from her experience in LNG, saying that, as a trained public relations expert, "I know that communities will always have conflict, but the ability to get people sit down to address the issue is a gift, I feel I have that gift".

"The task ahead is huge, I need each and every one of you", she urged

She affirmed her resolve to stand for the election, stating that, she has defied all the push backs. "It is God that gives power to whom he chooses. I can see the hand of God and I will not back down".

"I want you to send me. My loyalty will be for the community, for Eket Federal Constituency. I am presenting myself to you for service and I will not let you down".

In their remarks, the EPU vice president Mr. Udoyo Udoyo, Elder Nsudoh Nsudoh, Sir Jack Etteh extolled her qualities describing her as humble, visionable and courageous woman, urging her to stand firm, and strong. "There is no easy way to freedom, even the land of milk and honey God promised, the Israelites fought for it".

Also speaking, the village head of Etebi Idung Akpaisang, Chief Johnny Udia, advised that, everyone to give her the support she needs as her brothers and sisters. "I speak as a father, and no father ignores his responsibility to support his home, but we have to be careful knowing that we are all brothers and sisters and tomorrow, we will always gather together".

Dr. Judith Etuk was inducted into the Union as a member and decorated by Financial Secretary of the Union, Mrs. Grace Edinyang.
