The Police Command in Ebonyi has detained a middle-aged man, Chukwuma Onwe, for allegedly selling his 5-day-old son for N1.5 million.

Onwe, a native of Nwezenyi-Igbeagu Community in Izzi Local Government Area of the state, was apprehended when his would-be wife, Philomena Iroko, alerted her neighbour, who informed the police of the husband’s action.

The baby boy was said to have been sold to one Chinyere Ugochukwu, a female, who has also been nabbed by the police.

SP Joshua Ukandu, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Abakaliki, that the baby had been recovered from the alleged buyer

Ukandu said that the father of the child was arrested alongside the alleged buyer on Friday at the Azugwu area of Abakaliki Local Government Area of the state.

“Yes, he, Onwe, has been arrested and is currently in our custody. We are going to commence an investigation into the matter,” the PPRO said.

Iroko, the baby’s mother, said that her proposed husband took away her son to Ugochukwu (the alleged buyer) without her knowledge.

“The man, who is yet to be my husband, took the child and lied to me that he gave the baby to his sister for further care.

“I did not know that the woman he gave my son to had already paid him in exchange for my 5-day-old baby.

“Thank God, my son has been recovered and he is healthy. I commend the Nigeria Police Force,” she added.

Iroko, however, pleaded to the general public for help to enable her to take care of the baby, “The father of my son told me that he would marry me, but I didn’t know that he was deceiving me all the while. Look at me, where will I run to? No husband and no one to take care of my baby. I am begging the state government and individuals to come to my assistance,” she said.

Today 16th September 2024, members of the management committees across the six development centers in Ikwo LGA had their first meeting at the LG headquarter Onuebonyi Echara.

The meeting which begins with open prayer led by Elder Mrs Agnes Orichi and introduction of all the members, Immediately after that, the forum also went into election to elect their principal officers who will be piloting the affairs of the forum.

The forum elected Mr Nteoma Chimaobi JP as their leader,Mr Nteoma who defeated Chief Ewa Nworie with highest votes was declared winner by the Eleco chairman Hon Tochukwu Elom.

The forum also pledge their unalloyed support to the leadership of the governor of Ebonyi state Right Hon Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, the forum also promise to promote the people's charter of needs mantra across the rural areas in Ebonyi state,the forum also praise the leadership of the speaker Ebonyi state House of Assembly Right Hon Moses Ije Odunwa, and also commended the leadership style of the Ikwo LG council boss Barr Sunday Basil Nwankwo and congratulates him on his successful election and swearing inn for the second time as the executive chairman of Ikwo LGA, they also pledge their support to all the stakeholders of Ikwo Noyo Clan.

Why we didn’t participate in Ebonyi local council election- PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ebonyi State has given reason for its non-participation in the local council election in the state.

The Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission (EBSIEC) on Saturday conducted an election in the 171 wards of the 13 local councils in the state.

The chairman of the PDP caretaker committee in the state, Mr. Steve Oruruo, in a chat with journalists in Abakaliki blamed the party’s non-participation in the election on the leadership crisis.

He said the party was not happy with the situation.

Oruruo said the PDP executives in Ebonyi are working assiduously to bring the party back to life in the state.

He said: “Actually, we are not happy for not fielding a candidate. Of course, you must build your house first before you will be able to nominate candidates for elections.

“It’s true, our party is facing a lot of challenges, ranging from a leadership crisis and all that. I encourage our members to be focused in oneness.

“Right now, we are building on a strong platform to ensure that our party is stronger and united for a better Ebonyi and Nigeria at large.

“It is not good having one party system only in Ebonyi and that’s not good for democracy.
