Today, on World NGO Day, we celebrate the quiet builders, the organisations that step into gaps, the volunteers who show up without cameras, and the communities that refuse to wait for rescue.

At the Bakassi International Fish Festival Initiative, we understand that development is dignity in motion.

Our work has always been about more than a festival. It is about restoring narrative. Rebuilding pride. Creating economic pathways. Showing that Bakassi is not a story of displacement, but a story of resilience, culture, enterprise, and possibility.

NGOs play a critical role in shaping how communities are seen, and how they see themselves. When we shift perception, we shift opportunity. When we build platforms, we build prosperity.

Today, we honour every organisation working behind the scenes to strengthen local economies, preserve culture, empower young people, and drive sustainable impact.

The future of our communities will not be built by pity.
It will be built by partnership, structure, and belief.

Happy World NGO Day.

Bakassi International Fish Festival 4.0 Ends in Grand Style as Stakeholders Celebrate Blue Economy and Food Security Potential

The shores of Esuk Mkparawa in Ikang Town came alive with vibrant cultural displays and maritime excellence as the 4th edition of the Bakassi International Fish Festival (BIFF 4.0) successfully concluded on Wednesday, December 17, 2025.

The two-day event, which serves as a cornerstone for rebranding the region and reviving its fishing identity, brought together high-ranking government officials, traditional rulers, and the local community to celebrate Bakassi’s rich aquatic heritage.

The festival officially commenced on Tuesday, December 16, with a colorful opening ceremony. The Executive Chairman of Bakassi LGA, Otuekong Hon. Effiong Etim Okon, performed the official flag-off, marking the symbolic commencement of activities alongside the local fishing community.

The first day featured traditional rites and prayers, followed by the emotive "Letters from Fisherfolk" session and the "Whistle Blow" send-off for the fishing competition. The day transitioned into a vibrant "Pageantry Night" at the Ikang Motor Park, showcasing the Onyonyo/Usobo parade and local creative arts.

The Grand Finale on Wednesday, December 17, reached a fever pitch with the Boat Regatta and fish exhibition. Highlights of the closing day included fishing competition, where the fisherfolk arrived and presented the day's catches, displays of local wrestling that drew cheers from the massive crowd, official presentation of the new Mr. & Miss Bakassi, presentation of awards and prizes to winners of all contests and competitions.

The 4th edition saw an unprecedented gathering of stakeholders and political leaders, reflecting the festival’s acceptance by all stakeholders including the state and local government. The festival welcomed the presence of dignitaries, and stakeholders, including the Executive Chairman of Bakassi, Otuekong Hon. Effiong Etim Okon, Hon. Princess Christiana Eso, Vice Chairman of Bakassi LGA and Chairperson of all Vice Chairmen in Cross River State, Hon. Eyo Bassey, Member representing Bakassi State Constituency, Commander Patrick Odiong, Security Adviser (South) to the Governor, Rt. Hon. The event was further graced by members of the LGA Council, councilors, and the Traditional Rulers Council. The host community was led by the Village Head, HH Chief Antigha Cobham, alongside the fishing community, women, youth, and children who turned out in large numbers.

The organizers noted that the festival has grown from a volunteer effort into a stakeholders-backed event aimed at attracting international investors to the region’s Blue Economy.

As the event drew to an end, participants were encouraged to prepare for an even larger 5th edition in 2026, marking the official close of a festival that continues to serve as a symbol of resilience and determination of the Bakassi people.
