ARGUNGU SERIES
The Argungu Series documentation and representation project emerged from the Self-Tour Nigeria Project as a conscious artistic and cultural initiative dedicated to preserving, promoting, and projecting the rich heritage of the Argungu Emirate in Kebbi State, Nigeria, to both national and global audiences. The project is founded on the belief that culture remains one of the strongest pillars of identity, continuity, and collective memory, and that artistic documentation serves as a vital instrument for safeguarding this heritage for future generations.
Driven by extensive observation, travel, and direct engagement with the environment and people of Argungu, the series seeks to visually chronicle the emirate’s festivals, traditions, architecture, landscapes, fishing culture, durbar activities, local occupations, and everyday human experiences. Beyond mere representation, the project functions as a living archive—capturing moments, practices, and histories that may gradually disappear under the pressures of modernization and social transformation.
At the heart of the project lies the understanding that visual documentation and artistic representation are among the most powerful forms of communication. Images possess the unique ability to transcend language barriers and communicate directly with human consciousness. The impressions created through visual art often remain deeply embedded within the subconscious of viewers, continuing to resonate long after the moment of encounter. In this sense, art becomes not only an aesthetic experience but also a tool for education, preservation, cultural dialogue, and historical continuity.
The Argungu Series therefore stands as both an artistic journey and a cultural responsibility—an ongoing effort to preserve indigenous knowledge, celebrate communal identity, and contribute meaningfully to the positive global narrative of Nigerian cultural heritage through visual storytelling and documentation.
