In the wake

HABEEB

One day we were happy,
Sitting by the roadside
reminiscing about old times.
One day we were lively,
recalling the class window we broke
While playing thief and cop.

Yes my friend.
The days we journeyed to school
to and fro, gisting like it's a stone's stroll
and other days we ruled the streets,
licking our condensed ice cream
like princes viewing their kingdom.

The good ole days, my friend.
Even though life took us on a different journey,
You never hesitated to check up on me;
Between which a lot unsaid
Yes, we grew apart but you remain a part of me.
Now your light is off.

But your memory forever shines bright
RIP brother.

Observation

Here we are in a future
Still looking bleak.
A Tomorrow never realizes the dreams of yesterday
Until a wake is kept,
A dream is a dream
Our leaders with sinister grins,
continues in perpetual oppression.

A recycle from the time of freedom
One disingenuous leader to another
As we continue to fight
For freedom from the chains of independence...
An intelligent people; a backward race
A hidden glory, neo colonized;
and a bitter democracy, devoid of the people's voice.

Ponder

So I write to myself
It's a note of despair and hopelessness
From the rumbles of an empty stomach
To the grinding and gnashing of teeth
Quietly in my shed I sit
Humble and homeless I write

From the overflow of my nation's wealth
To the doorstep of a pauper's debt
Here we are now, ravaged and plowed
By merciless men
Who take hold of the scepter
Hungry and tearful I write

From the playfulness of childhood
To the discord of burrowing ethnic bigotry
Seeds and manipulation of such
Sown deep into the land
Maturing for the folly to harvest
Oh! we hail what's left of the
Torn and stretched I write

Oh Compatriots now in disunity
I sit and ponder
While my pen let out negative ink
My ink's realities influenced by my new found pessimism...
My love for green is martyred
Dyed to black
So, in tears I mourn and write
