EHUGBO AGE-GRADE SYSTEM

Age-grade system in Ehugbo is a formation of men and women born in a set of three years or more. It has been the bedrock of sustainable development in the society, as long as oral history can lead us. This year, the Transition and Change of Guard for all regiments of age-grades across the land will be held on the 20th of April, 2024. An eight-year period signals the end of each legislative assembly made up of legislators known as the Esaa, derived from the various age sets across the communities in Ehugbo, with the least age of attainment pegged at years, and climaxing at 75 years.

This year’s transition marks the 13th Assembly since 1920, heralding precisely, 13 speakers of the House traditionally known as Okabues. These Okabues are statutorily drawn from two autonomous communities: Ugwuegu and Ohaisu. It was because of the leadership tussle of the Okabueship that the Itim Autonomous Community embarked on a self-imposed exile in 2016, citing lopsidedness and biased methodology in selecting Okabues. However, they are back in the fold, after a series of lost litigation tussles, leaving out a microscopic faction behind.

The Esaa performs the dual function of lawmaking and adjudication, its hallowed chamber serves as the apex traditional court. During the period under review, they have adjudicated over sensitive land matters, property disputes, discrimination, disagreement, breach of contract, etc.

The age set which performs enforcement services is the Etos. They are primarily positioned to carry out fiats and enforce the laws made by the Esaa. For one to become an Eto-in-Council, such a person must belong to an age set of persons not younger than 45 years.

The formative age set in Ehugbo is known as Isi-Elia (Beginners), stratified as the Youth wing of the age-grade system, ranging from 35-44 years. All other age-grades below the age of 35 are confined at the village level and are called: Eto imezi, otika, or ohiekwu.
