In line with the vision of the Afikpo Arts Forum to reclaim and preserve Afikpo’s rich cultural heritage, while advancing arts and culture through the creativity of home-based artists, we are delighted to present a compelling art research series by one of our distinguished creatives.
This remarkable body of work is led by Ogbonnia Ukie, a respected lecturer and the Forum’s Art Curator/Technical Director, whose scholarship and artistic expression continue to shape the narrative of contemporary Afikpo art.
We invite you to experience the story, engage with the vision, and celebrate the heritage.

AGBOGHO-NJENJE SERIES 1

Title: Akama
Artist: Ogbonnia Ukie
Medium: Oil on Canvas
Size: 24 x 36 inches
Year: 2017

Agbogho-Njenje also known as Oshirioburuzo is a revered masquerade tradition of the Afikpo-Igbo people of Ebonyi State. A satirical yet graceful embodiment of the maiden spirit, it celebrates feminine beauty, movement, and ancestral elegance. Appearing annually to usher in the Iko-Okochi Festival, the masquerade moves through villages like a living fashion parade, rich in costume, rhythm, and meaning.

AKAMA (Symbol of Beauty) by Ogbonnia Ukie, captures this essence through realism—warm colors, elaborate regalia, and emotional depth. Beyond beauty, the painting reflects life’s fragile journey, resilience, and the unseen burdens we carry.
