Home for the Holidays

Growing up, going home for the holidays took place every 2 years. Our parents would pack me, my siblings, all our various bags and baggages and make the trip to Nigeria. A pilgrimage of sorts that began with arriving at the airport much too far in advance, a long flight, a 14 hour car ride to Abuja, a 5 hour ride to Makurdi and then finally another 4 hour ride to my fathers village, Mbayion. At the end of that road would be my paternal grandparents, all the cousins and the smell of the world as the sun came up, unchallenged by any other light but the stars and the moon. I can still remember the exact dimensions of that moment. The stars fading, the richness of the dew dipped fields so rich you could practically bite into it. My grandfather on his porch, making cocoa and parcelling it out to his grandchildren each morning, a benediction of love.
