Iconic afrobeat singer, Seun Kuti, on the 61st independence anniversary of the nation, says he believes there is nothing much to be celebrated.

In a statement sent to The PUNCH, the saxophonist who is also the convener of a group, Movement of The People, noted that Nigeria is near collapse as the high level of hunger, insecurity, unemployment and corruption is ‘worrisome’.

He said, “It is fitting to bring you all warm solidarity greetings as we celebrate the 61st anniversary of our dear nation! Even though there is nothing to celebrate, owing to the near-collapse in the state of our dear nation.

“With the worrisome level of hunger, insecurity, high rate of unemployment, and wanton looting, the celebration of today’s anniversary calls for a sober reflection and the need to re-organise ourselves to get involved in the democratic process with the view to set the nation on the road to recovery.”

The Grammy award nominee took the opportunity to urge Nigerians who are of voting age to participate in the voting process in other to make Nigeria great again.

“The decision to get Nigeria working from this moribund and mechanistic level is in our ‘thumbs’ and it is neither in the bombs nor bullets. The Movement of The People has now given every Nigerian of voting age the political platform to chose credible leaders across the 36 States and 774 local government of the federation,” Kuti said.

Giving some statistics, the musician claimed that Nigeria had become the ‘poverty capital of the world’. He said that as the ongoing voter’s registration has begun, all eligible Nigerians must get their voters card.

Kuti said, “In 1960, the poverty level was at 15 per cent, but today, the poverty level is 50 per cent, thereby making the Giant of Africa the poverty capital of the world. In Fela Anikulapo’s voice, ‘as time de go things just de bad, poor man de cry’. May the Legendary Abami Eda’s soul continue to rest in peace!

“The ongoing voter’s registration exercise is the starting point and all eligible Nigerians must get their voters card as the 2023 election has given us an ample opportunity as a people to collectively unite using the M.O.P as a platform to dislodge dealers called leaders.”

The Director General of the World Trade Organisation, Nigerian-born Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, says she is not interested in contesting the 2023 presidential election, describing the speculation as “utterly ridiculous and not true.”

Okonjo-Iweala spoke in reaction to the rumour that she is reportedly mulling the possibility of resigning her WTO job barely seven months into her 4 1/2-year term.

Rather, she said, “I just got here. I am enjoying what I’m doing. It is a very exciting job and I am trying to have some successes here.”

According to the Bloomberg News which broke the news, the WTO boss began the year with “a plan to score quick negotiating victories that she said would help reboot the dysfunctional Geneva-based trade body;” but she has fully grasped the frustrating reality of the WTO’s historical inertia.

The New York-based medium quoted five trade officials in Geneva who declined to be identified.

This year, Okonjo-Iweala has repeatedly told ambassadors and staff that she could easily walk away from the job, and reminds them she hasn’t bought any furniture for her temporary home in Geneva, the officials said.

An early departure of the WTO’s top trade official would add yet another layer of chaos to an organization suffering from an existential crisis that may lead governments to conclude the WTO is not a credible forum for addressing their shared challenges, the medium stated.

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, has said that the command is not aware of any impending protests on Independence Day.

Odumosu disclosed this to journalists in reaction to a question on some nongovernmental organisations’ intention to hold a demonstration to voice out their aggression against insecurities, police brutality, among other challenges bedeviling the country.

Speaking on Thursday, the police boss said no official letter had been received to notify the command of any protest, adding that it ought to be notified so security could be provided to prevent miscreants from taking advantage of the protest to cause mayhem in the state.

Odumosu said, “Regarding the October 1st protest, we keep on saying that every Nigerian has the right to express his/her feelings but it must be done within the ambits of the law.

“As of today, we have not received any letter from a group that they want to protest.

“I have always advised that those who want to embark on a protest are entitled to security, so we should be able to give them security so that the miscreants will not capitalize on the protest to create mayhem for law-abiding residents.

“They are law abiding in expressing their feelings, they have the constitutional rights to do that but the security agencies should be carried along, so that they will not be a victim of miscreants.

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), during his nationwide broadcast commemorating the nation’s 61st independence, advanced the reason behind the high prices of food in the country.

While alleging that the nation’s food capacity had increased despite the farmer-herder crises that had upset food supply, Buhari said the high prices of food was caused by middlemen who “buy and hoard these essential commodities for profiteering.”

The President said, “Unfortunately, as our food production capacity has increased, food prices have been going up due to artificial shortages created by middlemen who have been buying and hoarding these essential commodities for profiteering.”

In his speech, Buhari noted that the Federal Government had made plans to end the “disruptive and unpatriotic hoarding activities,” as well as ensure that food prices are affordable for Nigerians.

“To address this, I am hereby directing the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to rehabilitate the National Food Reserve Agency and also work with security agencies, the Nigerian Commodity Exchange, and the National Assembly to find a lasting solution to these disruptive and unpatriotic hoarding activities,” he stated.

The President further revealed that with some water projects, the enhancement of food production would be better in the country.

“To further enhance food production, we have completed several new dams and are in the process of rehabilitating several River Basin Development Authorities to enhance groundwater supply for rainfed agriculture as well as surface water for irrigation agriculture.
