Na Me Say Make You Late for Work?
I was on my way to work when my taxi driver suddenly parked and said, "Please give me a minute, let me collect something over there" — pointing to the other side of the road.
We were all in the car, waiting.
One minute... two minutes... three minutes...
Ah-ah! Where is this driver now?
What is he doing over there?
Does he not know I’m already late for work?
How can he just leave us here like this?
Suddenly, two passengers stepped down from the car to look around.
"Can you see him?" I asked.
"No o," they replied.
They couldn't even spot him anywhere.
Omo, what is going on?
I checked the time — I was already one hour late for work.
Then, after about five minutes, the guy finally showed up…
with a takeaway plate of food.
"Oga, why did you keep us waiting for so long?!" we all shouted.
He quietly entered the car and started the engine — no apology, no word.
"So our question no concern you abi?"
One passenger insisted he respond, but the driver remained silent.
Just two meters away from the spot, he stopped again.
"Hey, my friend!" he shouted at a man across the road.
"Please come!"
Haaa! Wetin dey happen again?
He was sluggish about it — no pressure, no sense of urgency.
When the man finally came, the driver started counting money…
but instead of giving it all at once, he was handing it out in parts. Slow. Steady. Very annoying.
At that point, everyone lost it.
"Oga, what’s your problem with you now? Take us away from here — we’re already late for work please!"
But he turned to the lady who had been complaining earlier, packed the car, and said: "Madam, you can come down."
Everybody shouted: "Oga, why now?! We’re all late for work — abeg move this car!"
Then he snapped and packed properly, faced us all and said:
"Excuse me sir—Na me say make you late for work?
Why you no wake up early if you wan reach work early?.........."
Omo… the insults flowed like river.
At that moment, something hit me deep. I became quiet... and sad.
"If I wanted to be at work early, maybe I should have left home earlier."
I felt so bad about the whole thing with mixed feelings, and kept wondering.
Was the driver right?
Or was he just wicked?
