Recording professional vocals isn’t just about having a good mic.
it’s about creating the right environment, performance, and technical balance. Here are the best practices that can help you:
1. Choose the Right Microphone
Large-diaphragm condensers.
Gives clear, detailed, modern vocals.
2. Control the Recording Environment.
Record in a treated room (avoid empty echoey spaces)
Use a reflection filter if a booth isn’t available. Also turn off AC, fans, phones to eliminate background noise
3. Proper Mic Placement.
6–8 inches from the mic (adjust for tone)
Use a pop filter to reduce plosives.
Also adjust height to match singer position.
4. Gain Staging & Levels.
Record peaks around -12dB to -6dB
Avoid clipping at all costs.
Don’t record too low either. It can increase background noise.
Leave headroom for pluggins to express themselves.
5. Capture Multiple Takes
Record 3–5 full takes.
Also record punch-ins for weak lines.
6. Maintain Vocal Health
No cold drinks before sessions
Avoid shouting before or during recording in other not to stress your voice.
Goodluck in your next recording..
