About 2 billion years ago, uranium deposits in what is now Gabon produced sustained nuclear fission without human engineers.

Scientists discovered evidence of these natural nuclear reactors when they noticed something unusual about uranium from the Oklo region.

Groundwater helped create the conditions needed for the reactions to continue, while the surrounding geology preserved evidence of what happened.

No laboratory.
No reactor design.
No engineers.

Just geology, water and the right conditions.

Before modern combat sports became global entertainment, Northern Nigeria already had its own fighting tradition.

Dambe is a traditional Hausa combat sport with deep connections to community, celebration, courage and ritual.

What makes it even more fascinating is that Dambe was historically associated with Hausa butcher communities, whose fighters developed a distinctive way of striking and defending.

Nsibidi is one of the most fascinating examples.

Developed among the Ejagham people of present day Nigeria and Cameroon, Nsibidi used symbols to communicate ideas, messages, agreements, warnings and cultural knowledge.

Some forms were public. Others were closely connected to restricted societies such as Ekpe.

Its influence also travelled beyond Africa through the forced movement of people during the transatlantic slave trade.

African history was never only spoken. Some of it was drawn, encoded and passed down through symbols.
