When I finished making this easel, I wanted to take pictures of it holding different sizes of paintings to illustrate how strong it is to handle various sizes of works. I decided to take a picture of the biggest painting I've ever made (which hangs in my sitting room) on it. I was reminded of the scale and splendour of this masterpiece as I watched it sit on the easel. I made the painting during the height of the COVID lockdown to capture how alone I felt with my thoughts.

Painting title: Lounge Nineteen
Size: 240cm by 180cm
Year of creation: 2021
Medium: oil and acrylic on canvas

Here is a commissioned painting of my wife’s friend and her husband. While creating it this month, I reflected on the institution of marriage and how important it is for the individuals in it and for the rest of society.

Today marks my second year of marriage to my wife, . I am very grateful for the gift of having a safe space to call home, the opportunity to love and be loved unconditionally, the joys and jaggedness of our joint journey.

I’m so grateful for my life, the life God has given me. A lot has happened and is happening, but God’s grace and mercy remain constant through it all. Happy birthday to me!

P.S. My art hiatus will soon be over. I’ve been attending to other important aspects of my life these past sixteen months.

"This, That", acrylic on canvas, 42 inches by 50 inches.

This piece was inspired by the song with the same title by Sarah Jaffe. It feels as if she perfectly describes my situation as a creative who struggles with the clumsiness of idealism and the chaos of choice. Here's a part of the lyrics below...

"For a second I forgot that I could have my way
Enough of this, enough of that
The idea is a slave
To some unknown territory buried in your brain way down

Just when I think that I've had all I can take
Enough of this, enough of that
It begins to take shape
See no potential in the bet if it's under the stakes way down

Breathe within, to be without
Reveal it all to me, reveal it all
I'm on the fence
I feel left out
Reveal it all to me, reveal it all

Apprehensive with every step that I take
Enough of this, enough of that
The idea is a slave
This is not gonna work so I push it away, way down
Well I'm just thinking out loud now, let me say
Enough of this, enough of that
Got to have it my way
See no potential in the bet if it's under the stakes way down"

I found this in my journal, written a long time ago:

"To understand the works of art I make, I ask myself, "what is this? What are these?" I think that is a question that mustn't get fully answered, else that would mean one thing: I'm dead.

But I'll attempt to answer to the best of my ability at each turn of my time here. Each work of art is representative of my thoughts, each an abstract concept that has been animated in some way, thoughts that though may not be understood, have nevertheless been expressed. Such is the quality of each painting, drawing, sculpture, sketch or furniture piece set forth to some varying degree of completion.

Bearing these in mind, I might just as well keep creating. It is like breathing; the heart needs to keep pulsing because that's what its essence is. The artist must never stop making (whether he understands his creations or not), and he must regard his creations as "good", hereby resting from all his work (putting agitations about the life of the work after completion to bed)."
