I know you all will be curious to know more about this Yoruba label "ADIRE" which is accepted locally and globally. Let's explore the word ADIRE together🤗 as I shed more light on the subject.

Adire is a Yoruba textiles label. It is a resist- dyed cloth produced and worn by the Yoruba people of Southwestern Nigeria. At inception it is produced in Abeokuta, Ibadan, Osogbo. Adire is common among the Egba people of Ogun State. It is a major local craft in Abeokuta, as Abeokuta housed a large textile hub "Adire Mall" at Itoku market.

At inception, Adire was dyed in indigo a locally sourced dyed. But it takes a new turn around the twenty century when the artisan/local dyers had access to a broader colour pallette of imported synthetic dyes in the second half of the twentieth century. It was also expanded to include a variety of hand dyed textiles using wax resist method( Batik) to produce patterned cloth with dazzling arrays of tints and hues.

Various designs are Adire Eleko, Adire Alabere, Adire Oniko, Adire Alabela, Crack/salad e.t.c, Today, we have different Adire patterns that have emerged as textile designers are been creative in their approach as they explore the indigenous designs.
Recently Adire is embraced by all, and the skill is been practiced by many young creatives along side local dyers/artisans.
