📌 Africa Grants: The Projects
The Oshikulu Cultural Village project has received one of our small grants to preserve and celebrate the cultural heritage of the Aawambo people in northern Namibia. At the heart of the initiative is the creation of a Living Museum that will showcase both tangible and intangible traditions—from traditional architecture and crafts to cultural practices, events, and storytelling—ensuring these living traditions are passed on to future generations.

Community participation is central to the project, with local residents—particularly young people—actively involved in learning traditional skills and contributing to cultural preservation. The Living Museum will also serve as a research and documentation hub, where cultural knowledge will be digitally recorded and made accessible to wider audiences. By promoting cultural tourism and supporting local artisans and small businesses, the initiative aims to create sustainable economic opportunities while reinvesting income into ongoing heritage preservation and community development.

HERITΛGE’s Grants for Africa are generously supported by the Mellon Foundation ’s Humanities in Place program. To receive a small grant from the HerMaP Africa program, applicants must demonstrate that their project has a lasting impact, builds local capacity and networks, and delivers measurable benefits for both heritage and communities.

Nena esiku lyAandonga

28 January 1904

The Battle of Namutoni fought between the Ondonga kingdoms and German South West Africa on 28 January 1904 was part of an uprising against German colonial expansion catalysed by the Herero uprising to the south that started a few weeks earlier. It was fought at the site of Fort Namutoni in northern Chief Nehale Mpingana of the Ondonga people led the attack on the fort. Mpingana was noted for his strongly anti-colonial stance having successfully attacked the Dorsland Trek-Boers in 1886. Continuous attacks on the fort by 500 Ondonga warriors lasted all day until slowing down. The Germans were defeated and retreated to the farm Sandhup 40 kilometres to the south on horseback. The following morning the fort was sacked and destroyed by Ondonga forces claiming a number of cattle from the fort.

In honour of King Nehale lyaMpinga, his Commander Shivute shaNdjongolo and other great warriors that fought this battle to defend Ondonga.

We named our first musem exhibition after Endengu Shivute shaNdjongolo. We also erected a cattle statue to symbolise the cattles that the warriors took from Namutoni.

Cattle is a significant property to own and is seen as a sign of wealth.
