From the Collection: The Dutch Man-of-War 'Friesland' ⚓️
Launched in 1663, the Friesland was a titan of the Dutch Golden Age. As a second-rate ship of the line, she was a primary instrument of naval power during a century defined by global trade expansion and fierce maritime conflict.

Carrying 80 guns and built for endurance in the Baltic and beyond, the Friesland played a critical role in securing the Dutch Republic’s dominance on the high seas. This model illustrates the transition to heavily armed, specialized warships that changed the face of naval warfare forever.

Test Your Maritime Knowledge! 🧐💡
Can you identify this industrial giant? It might look like a futuristic sculpture, but this model represents a vital piece of modern maritime technology often seen off our coast.

What are we looking at?

A) An offshore oil and gas platform
B) A deep-sea diamond mining crawler
C) A jack-up drilling rig
D) A marine research weather station

The Answer:
It’s C: A Jack-up Rig!

These incredible structures are mobile platforms used for offshore drilling and exploration. They are called "jack-ups" because they can lower their long steel legs to the seafloor and literally "jack" the entire hull above the water’s surface to stay stable against waves and currents.

Once the job is done, they lower the hull back into the water, pull up their legs, and are towed to a new location. These engineering marvels play a massive role in the energy and mining sectors that drive our coastal economy.

How many of you have spotted the real-life versions of these giants out in the bay? Tell us in the comments! 👇

From the Collection: The Windjammer 'Christian Radich' ⚓️

Launched in 1937, the Christian Radich is a symbol of Norway’s enduring relationship with the sea. Unlike many vessels converted from trade, she was purpose built for education, commissioned through a legacy left by businessman Christian Radich to train the next generation of sailors.

Her sleek white hull and three masted full rigging became world famous following her appearance in the 1958 film Windjammer. This model honors her decades of service, from navigating the Atlantic to her continued role in modern sail training. She remains a living testament to the importance of preserving traditional seamanship in a digital age.

From the Collection: The School Ship 'Amerigo Vespucci' ⚓️

Launched in 1931, the Amerigo Vespucci is a masterpiece of Italian naval architecture. Named after the explorer who gave his name to the Americas, she remains an active training vessel for the Italian Navy to this day.

Unlike many ships of her era, she was designed to honor the classic 18th century ship of the line, blending timeless aesthetics with the rigors of naval instruction. A symbol of diplomacy and maritime excellence, she is frequently cited as the most beautiful vessel afloat. This model captures her distinctive black and white hull and the intricate rigging essential for training future officers in the art of traditional navigation.

Witness a living legend that continues to bridge the gap between historic craftsmanship and modern naval tradition.
