During the battle of Uhud, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) held out his sword and asked who would take it and "give it its due."
Several prominent companions, including Umar (RA) and Zubair (RA), came forward but were turned away. When Abu Dujanah (RA) asked what its due was, the Prophet (PBUH) replied:
"That you continue to strike the enemy with it until it breaks"
Abu Dujanah (RA) was known for a distinctive red band or scarf that he would tie around his head before battle. This was a sign that he was ready to fight until victory or death. When the other companions saw him put it on, they would say, "Abu Dujanah has worn the band of death"
Wielding the Prophet's sword, he charged deep into the enemy ranks, displaying remarkable courage. A famous eyewitness account from Az-Zubair (RA) describes him reciting war poetry and splitting the enemy's lines
His story remains a powerful example of courage, loyalty, and adherence to the principles of chivalry in Islamic history.
