Raintown Film Festival Raintown Film Festival is held annually in Taiping Perak (northern Malaysia), a city recognized as one of the Best Cities to Live In in 2019.

After the Top 10 showcase of the Raintown Short Film Competition 2025 at the 2nd Raintown Film Festival last year, many people have been asking where they can watch these short films, especially those who were unable to attend the festival. We didn't have an answer at the time. We were simply waiting for the right place and the right moment to showcase these 10 beautiful films by our very own Malaysian filmmakers. And now, that time has come!

Bernard Chauly is a Taiping-born filmmaker and End of Life Doula living in the East of England. His romantic comedies Gol & Gincu, Pisau Cukur, Istanbul Aku Datang and Manisnya Cinta Di Cappadocia are regarded as modern Malaysian classics that helped refresh the countryโ€™s mainstream cinema. 2026 marks the 20th anniversary of his semi-autobiographical feature Goodbye Boys, which premiered at the Tokyo International Film Festival and explored growing up in Perakโ€™s Kinta Valley.

Bernardโ€™s short films Saying Goodbye and adam & steve won at the Malaysian Video Awards, a key platform for emerging filmmakers in the late 1990s and early 2000s. He hopes that the Raintown Film Festival will do the same for new generations of storytellers. A career highlight was directing the period drama miniseries Apa Dosaku: The Sybil Kathigasu Story, for which he received the Best Director award at Anugerah Seri Angkasa.

Passionate about the solidarity of Southeast Asian storytellers, Bernard co-curated KSFM Malaysian Shorts and MVA Fest, โ€˜connecting the dotsโ€™ between regional filmmakers as the festivals screened each otherโ€™s work. As co-Mentor of the Southeast Asian Film Lab at the Singapore International Film Festival (SGIFF) in 2016, he supported first-time feature filmmakers from across the region. This trajectory culminated in a โ€˜culinary happeningโ€™ that opened Kurzfilm Festival Hamburg when the focus was on Southeast Asia and themed โ€˜Home and its hidden cornersโ€™.

Also a culinary artist and chef, his earliest food memory is slurping soupy Loh Shi Fun at the Taiping Hawker Centre. An alumnus of Universiti Sains Malaysia, the University of Minnesota and Goldsmiths, University of London โ€“ and a Chevening Scholar โ€“ Bernard now finds deep meaning in โ€œbeing with, eating together, listening to life storiesโ€. He returns to Taiping as a jury member for the 3rd Raintown Film Festival.

The Top 20 short films will be shortlisted for this year's competition, and their films will be screened on the big screen at Paragon Cinemas, Taiping Mall during the 3rd Raintown Film Festival, taking place in early September 2026.

Stories are all around us. Whether we notice and reflect on them depends on ourselves. When a story creates emotional resonance and connection, that is often the story worth exploring and sharing through visual images.

It is always a challenge for filmmakers when there feels like โ€œnothing to sayโ€, and they simply choose a story at random. This often results in films that feel surface level, without offering audiences new perspectives or space for reflection; your short film becomes nothing more than surface.

Be sensitive and attentive to what is happening around you. There are always stories waiting to be discovered. We truly hope the Raintown Short Film Competition goes beyond being just a โ€œcompetitionโ€, and instead encourages filmmakers to share Malaysiaโ€™s untold stories, as well as their own personal stories.

Kumanavannan Rajendran is a Malaysian producer drawn to auteur-driven, slow cinema. Trained in law and shaped by years in television and independent production, he founded Om Sakthi Films in 2023. His work focuses on films rooted in the histories and lived experiences of Malaysiaโ€™s Tamil minority community, with current projects including documentary Araro Ariraro in post production, feature project Kaali as well as two short films titled Kairu and Maayappon in development.

His films have received recognition at home and abroad: Sayap was a finalist in BMW Shorties 2025, winning Best Sound Design and Cinematography; Burung di Tingkat 27 screened at Oberhausen in 2022; and Virus Mairus (2020) won the first ever Kuman Pictures Challenge. In 2024, he received the Parabellum Fresh Producer Award at Docs by the Sea.

He divides his time between the chaos of Kuala Lumpur and the tranquil village of Trimmis. When not reading scripts or closing accounts, he can be found cooking on an alpine train.

Mia Sabrina Mahadir is a multidisciplinary artist. She acts, directs, writes, teaches, makes resin ashtrays and soy candles, reads Tarot and rescues cats. She started acting from stage, learning through experience via klpacโ€™s Short+Sweet Festivals since 2012. She trained from many theatre acting gurus, such as Abdul Qahar Aqilah, Nicole Ann Thomas, Christopher Ling, Joe Hasham, and Tung Jit Yang.

Mia was nominated for Best Actress in 2016 BMW Shorties with the short film โ€œGirl from Sumateraโ€, which kicked off her film career. Her other notable works are "Samudera" (2017), "The Girls Are Alright" (2019), and "Mop" (2022). Despite being an indie darling, many may recognise Mia from her expansive commercial portfolio, such as Taylorโ€™s 2022 Raya ad โ€œSadaqahโ€, which she starred alongside the late Adibah Noor.

To Mia, a good film is noticed from its honesty and authenticity. Her top 3 favourite films are The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013), About Time (2013) and Lagi Lagi Senario (2001). Mia's last prominent apperance was as the Tari Piring dancer in Chong Keat Aun's "Pavane for an Infant", which was Malaysian selected entry for the 98th Academy Awards.

Yeo Jun Yu, born in 2003, is an independent filmmaker from Melaka, Malaysia. He began making films driven by emotions he could not fully explain. Most of his work focuses on small, often overlooked moments โ€” the subtle tensions between people or feelings that remain unspoken. Over time, he found that filmmaking had become the way he could understand life.

His recent short film Where The Fish Looked Up follows two children trying to save a fish on their way home. The project reinforced his interest in fleeting, real moments rather than grand or dramatic events. He prefers stories that unfold quietly, allowing gestures and simple moments to speak for themselves.

He also works as a unit stills photographer, observing stories from both inside and from the sidelines. While he remains open to exploring larger narratives in the future, he continues to pursue filmmaking in a simple and honest way, capturing lifeโ€™s subtle gestures with care and attention

Alee Isa is a copywriter and digital marketer with a background in film. With a deep-rooted love for cinema, she continues to follow films religiously, recognising the parallel between brand marketing and filmmaking โ€“ the art of finding the right story for the right audience.

Holding a Master's in Film Studies from the University of Kent UK, her academic expertise is evident in her thesis, โ€œMurder, Mysticism and Modern Nusantara: Generic Hybridity and its Cultural Context in the Cinema of Dain Said."

Currently, Alee channels her "film head" into her role at ANAABUโ„ข, a Malaysian fashion brand where she meticulously writes campaign stories for collections and spearheads original contents such as "We Are All Nomads At Heart," a one-off podcast where she's interviewed figures like Shi Han of Human Edition and Ahmad Faris from TAPAUtv, and , an editorial series showcasing creative professionals like filmmaker Jared Lee and Pamela Tan of Pohsin Studio, who resonate the lifestyle of the ANAABUโ„ข community.

Beyond her marketing role, Alee is also an aspiring moderator, having hosted retrospective short film screenings for Adam Zainal and participating in Film Forum: Reel Talk, where she conversed with director Nik Amir (Imaginur) and SIAR founder Ali Agung.

Her passion for cinema remains vibrant; she's an avid goer of independent screening venues like Wayang Budiman, Pasar Seni Picture Screening, Taman Desa Screening Club, and various film festivals, regularly sharing her insights through her personal social media platform and short reviews on Letterboxd.

Alee's directing credits include multiple short films, and she's notably recognised for her work on the TAPAUtv original web series, "Kau Memang Special Tapi Dia Double Cheese." In 2024, she marked her filmmaking comeback by directing her latest short film, "The Price I Pay For Hurting God's Favourite," currently in its final stages before festival submissions.
