His over 100 sketches are documented in the latest book, ORIGIN & EVOLUTION OF THE MALAYAN SHOPHOUSE, featuring over 100 shophouses across 175 years.

Digging deeper into each shophouse, author Robert Powell delves into the individual stories and history of shophouses across Malaysia and Singapore, in an attempt to map out the origin and evolution of shophouses in Malaya.

Encompassing 7 cities - Malacca, Penang, Singapore, Taiping, Ipoh, Kuching and Kuala Lumpur - this book is an attempt in linking the various shophouses in the cities, illustrating the history of the region.

We are pleased to announce our new release📚: the Origin & Evolution of the Malayan Shophouse!
This is the first book to attempt to give an overview of shophouses in Malaya from 1794 (Malacca) to 1969 (Kuala Lumpur) — a period of 175 years, during which over 30,000 shophouses were built. In this publication an attempt is made to link shophouses in various cities along the western seaboard of the peninsular and in Sarawak, all of which developed within their individual time frame. This is a must-read for anyone interested in Southeast Asian history, architecture, and the cultural forces that shaped modern Malaysia.
