We are an Iban community in rural Sarawak who serve as the gatekeeper to orang-utan habitat in Batang Ai National Park and Ulu Sungai Menyang Conservation Area. Our longhouse has 17 doors with a population of about 200 people.

We are committed in conserving orang-utan habitats because we are culturally connected to this great ape through our history and ancestry. With the support of Forest Depa
rtment Sarawak (FDS), 3,000 gaharu saplings (Aquilaria microcarpa) were successfully planted in 2016. The aim was to improve community livelihood and become a steward of nature.

In 2017, WWF-Malaysia partnered with us in expanding this initiative by planting 11,000 additional gaharu saplings on degraded land. Our gaharu tea, which is organically produced, is now available and every bottle sold will contribute to the conservation and protection of orang-utans and their natural habitats. Through FDS, Rumah Manggat's gaharu project has won the gold medal in the Sarawak State Civil Service Quality Award in the High-Performance category in 2019.

Rumah Manggat also works with Borneo Adventures and Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS-Malaysia), among others, on wildlife surveys, research and enforcement, and eco-tourism activities.
