MyAsli Fieldwork 2: Temiar (KOA Jenut, Gua Musang, Kelantan)

We made some improvements to our instruments after our maiden fieldwork with Kensiu speakers. For Temiar speakers, we added some tasks on Sang Kancil & Buaya, Covid Poster and Basic Greetings.

MyAsli Fieldwork 2: Temiar (KOA Jenut, Gua Musang, Kelantan)

We did some innovation for Map Task Activities with Temiar participants. As the tasks are usually complex and confusing (to us and to the participants), we created a name tag with a unique code for each participant and let them wear the tag around their neck. In this way, we could just refer to our master grand plan and coordinate the tasks using the participants' codes. It was a bit impersonal, but it made our life a lot easier. We hope future researchers would replicate our creative method. 🤭

MyAsli Fieldwork 2: Temiar (KOA Jenut, Gua Musang, Kelantan)

Hafiz is interviewing Tok Penghulu Ibrahim, the charismatic leader of Temiar community in KOA Jenut, Gua Musang. He was extremely enthusiastic throughout the interview session. He was particularly thrilled to see a team of researchers from a university who are doing, as he claimed, "rare work" on Orang Asli languages.

"This is fantastic! We hope that, one day, we don't have to go to Japan or England anymore to get our own data," he said as he talked deeply about his vision for his community.

Thanks for sharing your generous insights, Tok Ibrahim.

MyAsli Fieldwork 2: Temiar (KOA Jenut, Gua Musang, Kelantan)

Temiar is our first sample under the Senoi language family. We chose the Temiar community in Gua Musang for logistic reasons. We hope that we gathered the right representation of the Temiar sound system.

Working with two teenage girls of Temiar. One of the girls (the striped shirt) is Tok Penghulu Ibrahim's daughter. She is an undergraduate student at a public university in Malaysia. She's a gem, a proud example of Orang Asli's progress.

MyAsli Fieldwork 2: Temiar (KOA Jenut, Gua Musang, Kelantan)

This was our first time using the Zoom H4N Pro audio recorder. We connected a Boya dual microphone and it was plugged below the audio recorder. To do that, we had to raise the recorder, hence the three-legged tripod. It was complicated at first, but we got the hang of it after some time.
