For ancient Iban people, Pala’ Gajah tattoo design is not simply an image of an elephant head. It carries the relationship between the animal, the spirit world, and the experience of the person who wears it.
Traditionally, carrying this tattoo was associated with a person who had travelled toward the northern parts of Borneo island. Somewhere in what is now northern Kalimantan.
Pala’ Gajah tattoo design therefore connected with distance, travelling, and experience in tattoo journey paths of ancient Iban.

Deep in the heart of Sarawak rainforest, we spend a week completely dialled into the spirit of traditional tattooing. As a traditional Iban tattoo artist, participating in this gathering is always an incredible experience. Living off grid and cooling off in the river between tattooing sessions made the experience feel incredibly raw, sacred, and grounded. Beyond the ink itself, the days were packed with soulful live sape music, hypnotic ngajat dance, opening Miring rituals, and authentic jungle barbecue. It was powerful reminder of how our art, geography, ancestral heritage tie us all together. Sharing our stories, and experiences in that space is something truly special. Thank you to everyone who came out to support Borneo Hand Tapping Tattoo Weekend, it was a unforgettable weekend.

A heartfelt thank you to the organizers of the 3rd Southeast Asian Tourist Guide Conference for inviting me to be a narrator for the Understanding Pantang Tatuk Iban workshop!
It was an absolute honor to share the deep, sacred roots of our heritage with such an engaged audience. For a long time, many have only seen the aesthetic beauty of these tattoo designs. Being able to open a window into the true spiritual meanings, stories, and cultural significance behind each motif was incredibly fulfilling.
Seeing the participants walk away with a genuine understanding and appreciation for the soul of Iban culture made all the hard work worthwhile.
Thank you to everyone who attended, asked questions, and shared their energy with me. Our stories live on when we share them!
This may looks ordinary for some people, but is another personal achievement for me this year besides publishing my first book 😊

Quote from; The Sacred Art of Pantang Tatuk Iban: Bungai Mawang Maling.
Traditional Iban hand tapping tattoos was never be understood as only a pattern that placed onto the skin. Pantang Tatuk Iban was carried on our body during life. It could identify us as a descendant of our ancestors. It could accompany us during our journey and cultural practices. And according to the belief passed down by our elders, it could continue to identify us beyond life.
This is why traditional Iban tattooing cannot be understood only by studying the patterns. To understand Pantang, we also have to understand the world of beliefs surrounding it. The ink entered the skin, but the meaning reached beyond the skin. The tattoo became part of our relationship with our ancestors, our culture, our journey, and the spiritual world.
That spiritual understanding is one of the foundation of Pantang Tatuk Iban.

I’m incredibly proud to announce that my book, The Sacred Art of Pantang Tatuk Iban: Bungai Mawang Maling, is officially LIVE and shipping worldwide. This project has been a massive marathon. I gathered all the tattoo resources, research, and designs I had collected over more than two decades as a traditional tattoo artist, and hand drew two full portfolio books before formatting this final 218 pages manuscript. I am not a professional writer, but a traditional tattoo artist driven by a simple goal: to turn our fading oral tattoo history into a permanent record for future generations to learn from. Inside you have direct insight into authentic Pantang Tatuk Iban meanings and rituals. An extensive visual archive of traditional Iban tattoos motifs, fully illustrated by me. You can buy a copy directly from the online store. Click the direct link to visit the Lulu Bookstore Lulu.com LULU Book Publishers and they will handle the local printing, processing, and worldwide shipping automatically. Link is in my Bio and grab your hardcover copy today.

The Pantang Tatuk Iban tools may be simple, the tapping may look simply.
But behind every sound of the tap is knowledge. Behind every tools is experience.
Pantang Tatuk Iban is therefore not only the name of a tattooing technique, it represents a traditional way of tattooing that connects the tools, the tattooer, the person receiving the tattoo, and the generations that carried the knowledge forward.
The tattoo begins with the tap, but the tradition behind that tap reaches much further. šŸ»quote from my book.

A tradition is not kept alive by preserving the past untouched. It lives when we understand its roots, carry its meaning, and find the courage to pass it on. For me, preserving traditional Iban tattooing is therefore not about telling every future generation that they must live exactly as our ancestors lived. It is about giving them the knowledge they need to understand what their ancestors left behind.
Quote from my book Pantang Tatuk Iban.
