Attende, Domine is a Christian liturgical chant for the season of Lent, referred to in English as the Lent Prose. The themes of this hymn are the sinfulness of man and the mercy of God, a theological concept emphasised during Lent. The text is Mozarabic in origin and dates to the 10th century, and is sung to a Mode V Gregorian melody. In this version, the latin verses have been translated to English by Melvin Farrell in 1977

Lord, Who Throughout These 40 Days
Lyrics by Claudia Hernaman composed in 1873, this hymn signals the beginning of Lent and is often sung during Ash Wednesday services or throughout the season of Lent. The first two lines of the stanzas focus on a response of Christ when he faced temptation; the last two lines encourage Christians to model their behavior on Christ’s example. The classic themes of the Lenten season are presented in the stanzas of this hymn: Fasting and prayer (stanza one); Struggle with Satan and sin (stanza two);and Dying to self, meditation on scripture (stanza three). The text is sung to a common tune called St. Flavian which was first published in 1562.

This communion hymn gives us the hope that we will be able to receive the Body of Christ again in the near future. Until that happens, we welcome Jesus into our hearts spiritually.

The quality of the voice recordings is affected as we recorded this during quarantine with whatever devices that were available to each member.

The lyrics of this hymn is especially apt as we send off Anthony Soter Cardinal Fernandez today, and as we celebrate the Feast of All Saints tomorrow (the feast in honor of all the saints, known and unknown). Truly, His Eminence was a ‘living saint’ who touched many lives. May he, and all the Saints, be granted eternal rest.

For all the Saints who from their labors rest,
Who thee by faith before the world confessed,
Thy name, O Jesus, be forever blest.

Organ: Daniel De Costa
Vocals: Timothy Zarsadias
