BHUTAN | EP 8 ADVENTURE: Taking it one step at a time.
Tiger’s Nest day started early. I woke up feeling excited, knowing this was something I had been looking forward to for a long time. Even from the base of the hill, seeing the monastery from afar already felt surreal. It did not look real, just hanging there on the cliff.
Some people chose to ride a donkey halfway, but I decided to walk the whole way up. Step by step. The hike was not easy, but it was steady. Along the way, we came across little moments that made it special. Birds coming close, even hopping onto my hand, and our guide sharing about the plants, mushrooms, and wildlife around us. It made the journey feel alive, not just a hike.
After about one and a half to two hours, we reached the halfway point where there is a small café. We stopped for tea and a break, and I took out my sketchbook to draw while looking out at Tiger’s Nest across the valley. Sitting there, just observing, was already worth the climb.
As we continued, the path became even more impressive. The views kept opening up, and when we got closer, we passed a waterfall that felt like a natural pause before entering the monastery. The sound of the water, the cool air, it felt like a reset before stepping into something more sacred.
Inside the temple, no photos are allowed, and you are reminded to dress respectfully. It keeps the space quiet and focused. Walking through the rooms, you can feel that this place means something more than just a landmark.
Looking back, the whole experience felt like a once in a lifetime moment. Not just because of the view or the hike, but because of how it made me feel. Being able to walk up to one of the most sacred places in Bhutan, step by step, is something I will always remember.
*Many were wonder is it hard to hike, I would say as long as you have the determination, you certainly can do it. My tour guide once lead a 80yo grandma to the temple.
