When I was a kid, my father love bringing me around and showing me things.

I still remember one hot Merdeka Eve when he took me out to watch the fireworks. My dad wasn’t highly educated, but he always loved telling me about Malaysia’s history, and about the people who fought and sacrificed for our independence.

To him, this was a history worth being proud of. Something great, something bigger than ourselves.

It’s a little sad that many younger people today are slowly forgetting that.

Maybe for one day, we can put aside all the emotional and divisive topics that politicians keep pushing to separate us, provoke us, and make us see each other as different.

Today, let’s remember what came before us, and celebrate this one great day together.
