We are excited to share that 'Adagietto: The Fourth Movement on Clay', a contemporary art exhibition featuring artists from the Penang Pottery Club (PPC) in celebration of its 20th anniversary, will be presented by Dao Shang Shao (島上燒) at Blank Canvas.

Drawing from German composer Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 5 (1901-2), ‘Adagietto’ takes reference from its fourth — and Mahler’s most famed — movement. Following a near-death illness, Mahler abandons spoken lyrics in the movement, and it thus stands as a wordless love letter to his wife. A calm, yet passionate piece, it turns from grand elements instead for gentler harmonies that chart his inner psyche: his feelings arising from the intersection between the poles of love and death he had faced.

Inspired by Mahler’s sensitivity to music as a way of conveying emotion, the artists of PPC -– Ooi Woi Leong, Forrest Wong, Hong Jing, Oscar Ang, and Ch'ng Joo Pyin — similarly explore the emotive possibilities of clay in their works. Against its often utilitarian nature, how might clay reflect music, and even speak of feeling itself? As Mahler experiments with the musical form, these artists also thus play with the medium of clay, experimenting with line, form, and colour to find ways of conveying different emotions and moods.

Curated by Goh Cheng Hao and Yu Ke D**g, ‘Adagietto’ creates a space for meditation. It is a space where audiences are invited to wind down, reflect, and find moments of peace.
