When my mother became ill, she chose to recover at my home. To help her feel more “at home,” I photographed the old house and enlarged two images to hang on the wall of her sickroom. One of them was the “Jin Yu Man Tang” living room scene. I hoped these images could provide her some emotional comfort.
During her illness, she often looked at that photo and said, “Jin sui” (So beautiful).
I recall once, my eldest uncle from Hong Kong came to visit after many years. As he was leaving, he asked for a photo. “Let’s take it here,” said my mother, his elder sister. They stood beside the “Jin Yu Man Tang” shrine and posed for a picture. In the frame were the deities, ancestral tablets, trophies, and medals.
This shrine, always spotless, was like my mother’s enterprise — her pride and her entire world.
And truly, wasn’t it? It represented the fruits of her labor, her principles, and her lifelong pride.
After her passing, these images continually evoke memories of her, prompting me to understand what she meant by “beauty.”
