TURNING LOCAL RESOURCES INTO LIVING KNOWLEDGE

Through the Maybank Women Eco-Weavers Programme, participants from Kampung Kandang and Kampung Liu, Pitas, Sabah came together to explore the possibilities of natural dyes using plants found within their local environment.

The workshop produced 4 colours from 4 natural dye materials, Miri Plant, Tongs Plant, Tumeric Plant and Hibiscus Plant; with 32 participants taking part in this hands-on learning experience.

Beyond creating colour, initiatives like these help strengthen community knowledge, encourage the use of natural resources and support the continued practice of sustainable craft traditions.

In Memoriam: Ibu Ngot Binti Bi (1932 – 2026)

We mourn the passing of a true custodian of Tikar Bergerang, a precious and increasingly endangered weaving tradition of the Sarawak Malay community.

Appointed Adiguru Kraf Anyaman Tikar Bergerang by Kraftangan Malaysia in 2014, Ibu Ngot devoted her life to keeping this intricate art alive and passing its knowledge to future generations.

Her mastery was recognised through numerous accolades, including the UNESCO Seal of Excellence and the Hasanah Gold Threads Awards, where her work won Plaiting – Best Traditional in both 2023 and 2024. In 2024, she was also honoured with the Hasanah Gold Award, an award that recognizes her lifelong dedication to the craft.

At Tanoti, we honour Ibu Ngot not only for the beautiful mats she created, but for the knowledge, identity and heritage she carried in her hands.

As Tikar Bergerang faces the risk of disappearing, her legacy reminds us that preserving heritage means keeping the knowledge alive and passing it forward.

May her craft continue to speak across generations.

Al-Fatihah.

We got to know Mulberries and its gentle matriarch Kommaly Chanthavong, through our partnership with Maybank Foundation under the Maybank Women Eco-Weavers Programme.

The story of Madam Kommaly runs deep — hers is a story of grit, determination and an all-encompassing love for her people. Her contribution to Laos’ textiles industry is immense, yet even that seems small beside what she has achieved through weaving: restoring livelihoods, rebuilding communities and elevating lives in post-war Laos.

Thank you So This Is My Why for spotlighting this amazing human being. Kommaly Chanthavong reminds us of humanity at its very best.

And for those in KL, you will soon be able to discover Mulberries for yourselves. Their products will be available at the Tanoti flagship store at Merdeka 118 Mall, opening in November 2026.

From the heart of Rumah Unggam, Kapit to the city. 🌿✨

Today through September 4th, we are honored to feature our Maybank Women Eco Weaver at the Cultural Arts Showcase & Bazaar (KLGCC Mall, Level 1).

Come and witness the marvelous making of a Selendang Karap as demonstrated by Sarawak’s decorated master weaver Josephine.

The Magic of Karap:
This isn’t just weaving; it’s mathematical precision. Karap is a highly specialized continuous supplementary weft technique that uses supplementary heddles to lift specific threads, creating intricate, raised motifs woven directly into the textile. You can literally feel the heritage in the texture of the fabric.

Through the Maybank Foundation’s () dedicated incentive program, weavers in Kapit are receiving the support they need to master these complex Karap techniques, ensuring this beautiful Bornean heritage thrives for generations to come.

Experience the live demonstration and shop a curated selection of authentic woven products directly from the maker.
