A celebration of ASEAN heritage through the language of songket, Achiek Waves is one of a series of textile art pieces inspired by the diverse cultures of the region.

Completed in 2014 and installed at Menara CIMB (CIMB Malaysia), KL Sentral, the work draws inspiration from the iconic Acheik designs of Amarapura, Myanmar, traditionally worn as the male paso and female htamein. Reinterpreted in handwoven songket, it reflects the rich cultural connections that weave across ASEAN.

Designed by Dr June Ngo (June Ngo) in collaboration with Cult Gallery (CULT Gallery), and handwoven by Syamimi Razali using metallic Lurex threads on fine filament silk, Achiek Waves is a tribute to craftsmanship, cultural exchange, and CIMB’s presence across the region.

In Memoriam: Hajah Zainab @ Ngah binti Mamat (1942 – 2026)

Today, Malaysia bows to the passing of a true custodian of the country’s most precious artisanal knowledge.

Hajah Zainab, conferred Tokoh Kraf by Kraftangan Malaysia in 2022, devoted her life to preserving limar and Songket weaving. Under her stewardship, limar and songket became more than textiles, they became memory, heritage, and identity. She single-handedly revived these treasured traditions, ensuring they continued to breathe through new generations.

At Tanoti, we honour her spirit and legacy. May her work continue to shine across time.

Al-Fatihah.

Meet Madam Kommaly Chanthavong.

Beloved by the people of Laos, Madam Kommaly is a beacon of light for community artisans; supporting weavers, silk farmers and cottage industries across five provinces, reaching over 3,000 people.

Her work goes far beyond the loom. Through silk weaving, mulberry farming, agriculture, engineering and craft development, she has helped build entire ecosystems of livelihood, dignity and resilience for rural communities.

In 2015, she received the Ramon Magsaysay Award for her tireless efforts in reviving the ancient Laotian art of silk weaving and uplifting communities.

Tanoti has had the honour of meeting Madam Kommaly through our shared partnership with Maybank Foundation under the MWEW Programme. We are blessed to welcome her to Borneo Interwoven 2026, where she will inspire weavers across ASEAN to grow economies rooted in artisanal crafts.

Kenali Puan Kommaly Chanthavong.

Usaha beliau melangkaui dunia tenunan.
