Slightly unusual shots of a Blue Nawab (Polyura schreiber) nectar feeding, as they are normally pictured puddling.

I knew we had this species on site because I had found scraps of wing beneath the feeding spots of bee-eaters and falconets. But this is my first time seeing live ones! And luckily I was on the 2nd storey when I spotted them, as usually they are hard to see, being canopy flyers.

With little friends, all enjoying the flowers of Syzygium grande: Painted Jezebel (Delias hyparete), large wasps and some kind of beetle.

// OPEN CALL // Calling Singapore-based professional artists!

SUB+ RESIDENCIES x RIMBUN DAHAN
Application Deadline: 27 February 2026
Residency Period: 13 - 26 April 2026
Duration: 2 weeks

The Substation, in partnership with Rimbun Dahan (Malaysia), invites applications for a 14-day arts residency at Rimbun Dahan in Selangor, Malaysia. This residency is conceived as a space for recalibration β€” from production cycles, visibility demands, and institutional urgency β€” to support artistic practices and research that require time, attentiveness, and reorientation. In a cultural landscape increasingly shaped by outputs, timelines, and instrumental outcomes, this residency affirms the value of slowness, uncertainty, and practice without audience.

AN ECOLOGICAL IMMERSION FOR ARTISTS SEEKING SLOWNESS IN NATURE & WILDLIFE

Located on the ecologically rich urban fringe outside Kuala Lumpur, Rimbun Dahan offers artists time and space to think, work, and live differently. A renowned arts residency and cultural site, Rimbun Dahan stretches across a 14-acre compound in tranquil Kuang town. It is located within a Malay reserve area and characterised by heritage architecture, native gardens, wildlife, and a slower pace of daily life.

As guests of Rimbun Dahan, which is also home to pioneer Malaysian architect Hijjas Kasturi, artists are expected to adapt to the climate, environment, and cultural context with care and respect. The living and working conditions are intentionally close to nature: Spaces are fan-cooled or naturally ventilated, not air-conditioned; internet access is limited to shared office areas; and artists live in the natural habitat of the surrounding community.
