Dama Asia is a multiple award-winning music theatre company, well known for their exquisite blending of East-West harmonies in their musical performances. Since their inception in 1994, Dama’s productions have been staged to critical acclaims and full houses in Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Australia and China. c Festival, WOMAD Singapore, Silk & Bamboo Music Festival, Huayi Festival of Arts and Volvo World Music Festival. Currently, the production house has five main areas of focus: (a) Dama Music Theatre (musical), (b) Dama Playhouse (drama), (c) Dama International Opera (opera); (d) performing arts education; and (e) event. Dama also enjoyed the artistic collaboration and support from Professor Wu Yanqiu (China), Chris Grady (the UK), Kevin Alan Park (South Korea) and Hsu Wei-En (Taiwan). Dama's recording of Eternally was featured in renowned film director Tsai Ming-Liang's film, I Don't Want To Sleep Alone, which was screened at the Venice International Film Festival 2006 in Italy.

久闻其名的《只此青绿》舞剧在上海文化广场演出，全场爆满，一票难求。恰逢前一天与剧院费总开会时提起此事，他说由他来安排。🙏
舞剧的主角是宋代画家王希孟，他十八岁时用不到半年时间绘成《千里江山图》，但年仅二十余岁便英年早逝。剧中另一主角展卷人是一位现代研究员，作为故事中的叙述者和“穿越者”，引领观众走进画作的世界。剧情展现了展卷人因潜心钻研画卷，走进了王希孟的内心，陪伴他经历了呕心沥血绘制这幅画作的宝贵时光。
这是一部非常震撼的舞剧。从开场舞者在台前背对观众缓缓升起，再慢慢步入舞台，到剧终前画家作画时的挣扎，每一幕都令人触动，让人泪如泉涌。
I finally managed to catch the sold-out celebrated dance drama ONLY THIS GREEN at the invitation of Mr Fei, General Manager of the Shanghai Culture Square Theatre.
Inspired by the iconic Song Dynasty painting “A Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains”, the work tells the story of its young creator, Wang Ximeng, who completed the masterpiece at just eighteen before dying in his early twenties. The narrative unfolds through the eyes of a modern-day scroll conservator who serves as a time-travelling guide, leading us into the painter's world as he painstakingly brings his 35-foot masterpiece to life.
From the opening where dancers emerge from beneath the stage and gradually step into the imagined landscape of the painting, to the poignant final moments of the artist's struggle and sacrifice, the experience was deeply moving.

I managed to catch Joyce DiDonato, still performing magnificently at 57. She is a leading contemporary opera singer alongside such luminaries as Renée Fleming, Anna Netrebko, and Angela Gheorghiu.
Her genre-crossing musical journey, SONGPLAY seamlessly blends classical vocal repertoire with jazz standards, tango influences, and moments of improvisation.
It was a pity that the hall was only about half full. Nevertheless, the audience responded enthusiastically throughout the evening.

With so much buzz surrounding the latest Chinese box-office hit “Dear You”, my family and I decided to include it in our holiday itinerary and caught the film while in Dalian, Liaoning.
Told in the Teochew dialect, “Dear You”, the story draws on the tradition of early Chinese migrants to Nanyang, who regularly sent letters and remittances home to support their families. It resonated deeply with us, as it closely mirrors our own family history in Bukit Mertajam and brought back many childhood memories.

I took a one-hour high-speed train ride from Beijing to Shijiazhuang to watch the much-acclaimed, award-winning Wu opera ‘Three Times Beating The White Bone Demon’, based on a famous episode from Journey to the West.
Through a dazzling series of acrobatic combat sequences filled with tumbling, striking, falling and soaring leaps, the production vividly recounts how Sun Wukong repeatedly sees through the White Bone Demon’s clever disguises before ultimately subduing her.
The inventive incorporation of drones, lighting effects and face-changing techniques made the opera all the more thrilling and captivating even audiences unfamiliar with traditional Chinese opera.
特地坐了一小时高铁从北京赶到石家庄，去看那部备受好评、拿奖拿到手软的婺剧《三打白骨精》。这出戏取材自《西游记》里的经典桥段。
全剧有一连串让人眼花缭乱的武打场面——翻、打、跌、扑、腾空跳跃——把孙悟空如何一次次识破白骨精的狡猾伪装，最后把她降服的过程演得活灵活现。
戏里还创新地用上了无人机、灯光特效和变脸技巧，让整出戏更加惊险刺激，就算是不熟悉传统戏曲的观众，也会看得津津有味。

The play The Lychees of Chang’an, the production embraces a minimalist stage design and highly physical storytelling. Actors run, tumble, and fall to convey the hardship of a low-ranking official tasked with an impossible mission: transporting fresh lychees from Lingnan to Chang’an – over 2,500 km – in just three days, for the birthday of Yang Guifei, the beloved consort of Emperor Xuanzong. Woven with sharp, absurd workplace humour, the play is at once hilarious and deeply affecting.
Since its premiere, the production has toured nationwide with over 100 performances and has won multiple honors, including recognition as one of the “Top Ten Most Influential Plays of 2025.”

I recently caught the stage play The Lychees of Chang’an in Xi’an, at the invitation of Li Chao, President of Xi’an Theatre.
Both this stage production and the critically acclaimed 2025 box-office hit film are adapted from Ma Boyong’s novel, developed by different creative teams and premiering almost concurrently in May 2025.
To my surprise, the stage adaptation left a deeper impression on me than the film. I did not expect to be moved to tears several times—even as I found myself laughing throughout.

受西安话剧院院长李超邀请，我近日在西安观看了话剧《长安的荔枝》。
话剧版与电影版《长安的荔枝》均改编自马伯庸的同名小说，由不同创作团队打造，并于2025年5月前后几乎同期与观众见面；两者皆取得了口碑与票房双丰收的佳绩。
去年看电影版时，我只觉得它是一部轻松幽默的喜剧，印象并不算特别深刻。没想到这次观看话剧版，竟让我在笑声中数度潸然泪下，所带来的触动与震撼，远比电影更为深刻。
