I always wanted a MacBook.
STORY TIME!
Last month(December 2023), I found my wife old laptop MacBook Air 13’ 2018.
The reason it is consider as a laptop because back then late in 2019 she bought a new one not even a year using the 2018 MBA.
She spilled water from her water bottle inside her tote bag with the laptop inside the bag. Unfortunately a few days after the incident, the laptop cannot be turned on again. Went to the 3rd party repair shop, they quoted her nearly RM2.5k to repair the laptop. Decided to buy a new one instead since the old laptop is not covered for warranty dude to water damage.
Laptop been laying there untouched for 3 years. When I found it, I told my wife could I have it and use it if I could repair it? She said yes.
At first, the laptop wasn’t able to start/turn on. But until I plugged in the charger cable, the laptop turned on. Still using Mojave version of MacOS I was a little slow processing what is what. The battery wasn’t charging, and the system asked for the battery to be replace.
Went back to KL, bought a new battery, DIY’ed it myself, replace it. It’s all good. I can use it. But not until something unfortunate happened. While I was resetting(factory reset) the laptop, everything was fine. Until when it’s time to reinstall the OS, Apple recovery server wasn’t able to connect. Tried everything there is on the Internet trying to reinstall the OS, but none succeeded.
I gave up, lookup for a mac repair shop if they could solve the MBA 2018 problem. I found 1 repair shop that has 5 Star rating on google search. Make an appointment with them the next day. Went to the shop the next day, greeted by super friendly staff(forgotten his name). They also help to diagnose the problem, using the same troubleshoot I’ve done, but still unable to connect to Apple recovery server. The last resort was to try to push update from another mac into this MBA 2018. IT WORKS!!!
Therefore, I have a MacBook now. Although I’m only using this laptop for my admin and some light editing/designing stuff. My full editing rig I’m using the Mac Mini M1.
