*Title: Field Work: Performing Politics On The Padang

In this session, Mark Teh will share a short lecture performance titled Field Work: Performing Politics On The Padang. Over the duration of 30 minutes, he revisits performances and protests he witnessed between 1998 to the present, on the peripheries and padang of Dataran Merdeka. Weaving together the personal and the political, it meanders around Reformasi, BERSIH, & Occupy Dataran, as well as Merdeka Day parades, Emily of Emerald Hill, & The Actors Studio - the original, underground one. There's also stuff about the typology of colonial padangs, and the trials of teenage dating at the Dataran.

Mark Teh is a performance maker, researcher, and curator based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. His diverse, collaborative projects take on documentary, speculative and generative forms, and address the entanglements of history, memory and counter-mapping. His practice is situated primarily in performance, but also operates via exhibitions, education, social interventions, curating and writing.

of sent these fabulous photos of their ILHAM Kids Art Discovery Tour last Friday.

Reviews included “creepy but interesting” (PANGKIS), “comfortable” “warm” “soft” “inviting” (tikar compared to table). Thank you so much for loving our show and introducing it to young people! Reposting from their IG:

We had our first ILHAM Kids Art Discovery Tour last Friday for a show that we personally love a lot as : lift the tikar! by and her collaborators. This exhibition at is presented as part of .exhibition in Kuala Lumpur (https://borneoheart.yeeilann.com) and co-produced by and supported by .

This exhibition at is a small but significant show packed with many powerful points about Bornean culture and heritage, politics, power, feminism and the symbolism found in colour, shapes, and furniture.

As always, we have some hands-on activities at the end to drive home the themes explored during our tours. Kids did a little social experiment relating to tikars (weaved mats) and tables, and gained some awareness about through the experience and talking about it. We also discussed the value of handmade heritage items versus mass-produced products.

A simple paper weaving exercise also enabled kids to understand the creativity, intelligence and planning as well as the focus, tenacity and effort required to produce a beautiful tikar. As some children pointed out “Weaving is back-breaking work!!”

We have 9 tours to go, with dates spread out between now and early June. Visit ’s website or PM us ( ) for more details. Hope to welcome some of you on tour with us soon!
