Thank you, Valentine, for opening doors for all of us, not only to your gallery, but to Southeast Asia and the many possibilities it held.

The Back Room is proud to announce our latest gallery collaboration with Jakarta-based ara contemporary, presenting the solo exhibition of Iwan Effendi (). Titled ๐™ฒ๐š˜-๐™ฟ๐š›๐šŽ๐šœ๐šŽ๐š—๐šŒ๐šŽ, the exhibition will be the artistโ€™s second time exhibiting in Kuala Lumpur. He is currently one of the leading names in Indonesian contemporary art, having exhibited in galleries and participated in residencies all around the world.ย

Iwan Effendi is based in Jogjakarta, where he also serves as the co-founder of . Under Papermoon, Iwan has become renowned for his distinct style of depicting figures, featuring large, round heads with beadlike eyes and tiny, worried mouths, giving off the impression of childlike innocence and a mix of wonder and fear. His beloved, larger-than-life puppets (known as boneka in Indonesian) have delighted audiences with their unique appearances, impressive mechanisms for movement, and immersive set designs and stories. He extends the immersiveness of puppet theatre to exhibition-making, creating sculptures and murals to accompany his artworks. ๐™ฒ๐š˜-๐™ฟ๐š›๐šŽ๐šœ๐šŽ๐š—๐šŒ๐šŽ will be no different, and will feature a site-specific, mixed-media charcoal mural alongside several new paintings on canvas.ย

Please join us and Iwan for the opening reception of ๐™ฒ๐š˜-๐™ฟ๐š›๐šŽ๐šœ๐šŽ๐š—๐šŒ๐šŽ this coming Thursday, June 11th from 7pm onwards.

Some installation shots from ๐‘…๐‘œ๐‘Ž๐‘‘๐‘˜๐‘–๐‘™๐‘™, a solo exhibition by Silas Oo (), on view at our gallery from 9 May through 7 June 2026.

With a deadpan bluntness akin to the way we encounter dead animals on the street, the showโ€™s contents are precisely what its title suggests. The ten drawings depict various forms of roadkill encountered by the artist on the streets of the city, streaked, smeared, and slathered across hot tar, organs steaming in the tropical heatโ€ฆ but with some of their gorier elements transmogrified into a collage of car parts, making a chimera of machine and animal matter.

The works are accompanied by texts by Ellen Lee in a booklet designed by Ryan Naga, who also designed the exhibition poster. We are open today and throughout the weekend from 12pm โ€“ 6pm.

Multiculturalism, interculturalism, hybridities, Peranakan, Chitty, creolisation โ€” we use these terms all the time, but what do they really mean?

Letโ€™s ask the experts.

Selected participants will have the opportunity to explore and interrogate โ€œperanakanโ€ and creole cultures โ€” from the well-known Baba Nyonya and Chitty communities, to the lesser-known โ€œperanakanโ€ cultures of Kelantan and Terengganu, as well as the new creole cultures and future hybridities emerging today.

Through a dynamic series of talks, performance lectures, discussions, and practical physical classes, participants will engage directly with both academics and artists working across disciplines and traditions.

The line-up includes Sumit Mandal, Vila Somiah, Wong Yee Von, Norzizi Zulkifli, Joseph Gonzales, Pauline Fan, Pue Giok Hun, Noramin Farid, Kam Raslan, and Jo Kukathas.

We hope participants leave inspired to begin โ€” or continue โ€” their multicultural artistic journey.

Both arts students and performing arts professionals are invited to apply and represent Malaysia as part of this regional exchange initiative supported by UNESCO Jakarta.

If you are coming for one of these events, try to check out the other, as theyโ€™re both within walking distance of each other. See you around town!
