Sabah considering a ban on fish popular with Chinese tourists 🐟👀

Semporna has another thing other than the beautiful islands drawing Chinese tourists — and it's the Humphead Wrasse, locally known as Mameng.

Posts on social media showing Chinese tourists boasting about eating the fish cheaply in Semporna — a bargain considering it is banned back home in China. In Semporna, live Humphead Wrasse sells for less than RM300 per kg — a fraction of the price compared to Hong Kong, where the same fish reportedly cost more than 10 times that amount before Covid. 😳

The problem is — Mameng is an endangered species listed under CITES, the international convention that regulates trade in endangered wildlife.

Sabah currently allows the fish to be caught, sold and consumed locally — but has a zero export quota, meaning it cannot be traded outside the state. Now, following growing attention on the issue and the demand from Chinese tourists, Sabah is reevaluating introducing a full ban to safeguard the Humphead Wrasse species.

Semporna's world-class diving is as much about its incredible marine life as it is about its crystal clear waters — and protecting its marine ecosystem is very important. 🌊🙏🏽

🌸 Zoanthids may be small, but they’re one of the most fascinating colonial corals in the reef aquarium.

Each polyp is connected to the colony through a shared tissue called the coenenchyme, allowing nutrients to be shared and the colony to grow together as a living mat.

With stable parameters, moderate flow, and proper lighting, zoanthids can reward reef keepers with incredible colours and fast colony growth.

While most of their energy comes from photosynthesis through their zooxanthellae, occasional feeding with fine particulate foods can help support growth and coloration.

🍽️ Many reefers like to feed their zoanthids with Reef-Roids for additional nutrition.
