Today, we had the privilege of filming Hajah Erongan of Kampung Rampaian Laut, Kota Belud, during her demonstration of the traditional Iranun Liyangkitan.
Hajah Erongan is the only remaining practitioner within her ethnic community who is still able to craft the Liyangkitan. With deep emotion, she shared that her failing eyesight has prevented her from continuing this intricate art. Sadly, no one has come forward to learn or carry on her legacy.
Through the EMKP project, she expressed her pride in being part of this important documentation effort — a final witness to a disappearing heritage. The Liyangkitan is not merely a craft; it is a cultural memory woven by hand, patience, and identity. Today’s recording may stand as one of the last visual testimonies of this precious Iranun tradition.
Thank you, Hajah, for your generosity, your strength, and for entrusting us with your legacy. May your knowledge remain alive in history, even as the hands that shaped it grow weary.

Preserving the Linangkit Cross-Stitch Tradition

We had the privilege of documenting and filming Faustina, a Rungus woman from Kampung Pata, Kudat, now residing in Kampung Limbawan, Keningau, after marrying her husband from the Nabai Murut community. A mother of three, Faustina began her journey with linangkit cross-stitch more than 22 years ago.

Her passion took root shortly after her marriage and the birth of her first child, when she searched for a meaningful way to spend her free time. A visit to the Kaamatan Harvest Festival sparked her interest in linangkit needlework weaving. Eventually, she shifted her focus to cross-stitch, which she found easier, faster, and more practical and yet still deeply connected to tradition.

Over time, Faustina mastered a variety of linangkit motifs, including Gana, Rungus, Nabai, and Kuijau designs, becoming highly skilled in this unique art form. Alongside linangkit, she also excels in traditional beadwork, a craft she first learned at the young age of seven. Today, she serves as both a cultural bearer and a teacher, offering workshops in cross-stitch and beadwork to eager learners.

Her dedication has reached far beyond her village. Faustina is regularly invited by government agencies, colleges, and schools to conduct workshops, sharing her expertise and inspiring the younger generation. She also showcases her creations on social media, where her works highlight the beauty and intricacy of Rungus cultural artistry.

As a small entrepreneur, Faustina runs a modest business that not only supports her family but also promotes the living heritage of linangkit. Her commitment to passing on tradition is evident in her family too where her eldest daughter has already created her own Gana costume using linangkit cross-stitch techniques under her mother’s guidance.

Through her perseverance, creativity, and generosity, Faustina has become a shining figure in safeguarding and transmitting the art of linangkit cross-stitch. Her journey is a testament to the strength of cultural heritage and its continued relevance in modern life. Truly, kudos to Faustina for her unwavering commitment to ensuring this tradition thrives for generations to come.
