Bilis Rakyat
Our work this year is inspired by budu, a traditional fermented fish condiment that has long been celebrated as a cultural marker of the Malay communities in Southern Thailand (Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat) and the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia (Kelantan and Terengganu).
Budu is made from anchovies and salt through a fermentation process that lasts between six and twelve months. During this transformation, the anchovies gradually lose their original form and become something entirely new.
From this process emerged Bilis Rakyat. The work serves as a metaphor for society itself - how ordinary people, little by little, reshape their collective memory, identity, and resilience while living through continuous pressure, change, and the passage of time.
Join us at “Kenduri Seni Patani – RASA”.
Enjoy the art. Enjoy the show. See you in Pattani ✊🏻
