Lee Kok Leong
Resident Conductor & Music Director, The klpac Orchestra
With over two decades of experience in Malaysia’s orchestral and music education scene, Lee Kok Leong has established himself as a versatile violist, conductor, and educator dedicated to nurturing musical excellence and community engagement.
As a violist, Kok Leong has performed widely with prominent ensembles including the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra, Penang Philharmonic Orchestra, Kuala Lumpur City Hall Orchestra, RTM Orchestra, Galaxy Chamber Orchestra, Friends of Strings Chamber, and Malaysia’s first baroque music ensemble, Wicked Music People. His performance career has spanned symphonic, chamber, and contemporary repertoires. Kok Leong made his conducting debut with the Galaxy Orchestra in 2005 and later served as its Resident Conductor from 2007 to 2011. From 2010 onwards, he was mentored by the late Brian Tan, founder of The klpac Orchestra, whose passion and vision for community music deeply shaped his artistic philosophy. He further honed his craft through conducting masterclasses under renowned pianist and conductor Elaine Pao. In 2015, Kok Leong was appointed Resident Conductor and Music Director of The klpac Orchestra, continuing his mentor’s legacy of developing young musicians and bringing orchestral music closer to the public.
Beyond The klpac Orchestra, he has guest-conducted at the Klang Music Festival, Soundbridge Contemporary Music Festival, and in theatrical productions such as Euphrasia The Musical, which toured nationally after its Kuala Lumpur premiere. Since 2014, he has also led the Friends of Strings Chamber Ensemble.
A passionate music educator, Kok Leong founded Ottava Music in 2019 and currently directs string ensembles at Chong Hwa, Tsun Jin, and Pin Hwa Independent High Schools. He is also a frequent adjudicator for national and international music competitions.
In 2016, he was nominated for Best Music Direction / Conductor at the BOH Cameronian Arts Awards. Most recently, in September 2025, he led The klpac Orchestra in a monumental performance of Yellow River Cantata at Dewan Filharmonik Petronas, collaborating with nearly 200 choir members from Kuen Cheng High School, Confucian Private Secondary School, Tsun Jin High School, Pay Fong Middle School, Malaysia Institute of Art, and Resonance Choir.
