Up next, production team member Xue Li will perform in the collaborative piece Bonding.

Xueli is a dedicated dance artist currently active in the realms of theater art creation and research. She is now based between Malaysia and Singapore. In 2023, Xueli graduated from the Nanjing University of the Arts in China, majoring in Contemporary Dance Choreography. She collaborated with various choreographers and has also presented her own dance experimental theatre piece ‘Vital insights’ , dance piece ’The Sounds’ ‘Yearning’ and ‘Lonely Boat’ which have won championships and gold awards in dance competitions. Xueli is also the founder and leader of 'ToGather,' a contact improvisation community activity aimed at promoting community interaction and connection through contact improvisation. She actively explores different somatic practices and integrates various elements into dance, expanding the possibilities of the body's expression in her creations.

Next up is our production designer and dramaturg, Khairul Kamsani!

Incredibly charismatic, he plays a crucial role, taking on multiple responsibilities across both works, The Last Shaman and Bonding. He brings depth and meaning to the entire production, making it even more impactful.

“Khairul Kamsani is a theatre practitioner, academic, and educator; a PhD candidate in ECAT (Embodied Cybernetic Actor Training) at De Montfort University, and Industry Drama Fellow at the University of Hull, teaching acting across the 3-year groups on the BA Acting program, and directing for the BA Drama program. He completed his MA in Actor Training & Coaching at the Royal Central School of Speech & Drama (London, 2017) and a Directing Residency at Singapore Repertory Theatre (2016-2017). He has over a decade of experience as a professional theatre director and designer (Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, United Kingdom). He has presented his research at: Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts Virtual Conference (January 2022), Doctoral College Showcase DMU (April 2023), Collisions: Royal Central School of Speech & Drama (September 2024), and Prague Quadrennial Symposium: Technologies in Theatre, Performance, and Exhibition Design (October 2024).”

A Dance Theatre Double Bill

Let's introduce our production member, Sook Kuan!
Sook Kuan will present her own piece, The Last Shaman, as well as the second piece, Bonding.

Sook Kuan received her Master's Degree in Arts (Creative Arts) from Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) in 2012. She served as a tutor and dance lecturer at UMS for eight years
(2006-2013) before working as a full-time dance artist at Borneo Dance Theatre (BDT) from 2014 to 2016. In 2016, she became an independent choreographer and dance artist. In 2017, Sook Kuan moved to Singapore to further her exposure and growth, engaging in collaborations with contemporary dance, theatre, and movement practitioners.
Her work is deeply influenced by ritual and shamanic dance practices in Sabah, driving her quest for authenticity in her creations.
Sook Kuan has received accolades such as Overall Champion (2010) and Outstanding Award (2016) at the Malaysia National Chinese Cultural Dance Open
Competition. Her solo piece, "Tapang Tree, was a finalist in the 2nd Solo & Duo Challenge for MASDANZA (Korea in
2017. She has also collaborated on internationally recognized works like "The Love of Tapang Tree", shortlisted for Media Library 2020| Visions du Reel, International Film Festival Nyon (Switzerland) and Guangzhou International Documentary Film Festival
(2021).
She founded the Tang Dance Project in 2016, producing full-length performances inspired by true stories connected to nature. Her recent works include
"Breakthrough Journey" for Japan Cultural Expo 2021,
"The Brides" 2021, "Burying Children" 2023, "Bonding"
(2024) and "The Last Shaman" (2024).Through her journey and extensive body of work, Sook Kuan strives to deepen the authentic connection between humans and their surroundings, hoping to make a meaningful contribution to the world of dance and theatre performance.

Synopsis 简介：
Then, you were the weight I couldn’t bear;
Now, you are the bond I cannot break;
And one day, we will be the longing that eternally lives within our hearts.

Inspired by Sook Kuan and Xue Li's personal journey, this dance theatre work explores the complex, tender and at times challenging moments shared between a mother and daughter as they navigate the passage of time. It depicts their evolving relationship—a delicate balance of interdependence and personal growth. Through their intertwined paths, both are shaped by the push and pull of love and the quest for individuality. The work reflects the emotional depth and enduring bond that remains, no matter the distance or change.

昨日，妳是挥之不去的羁绊；
今日，妳是无可替代的陪伴；
而明日，妳我将化作今生唯一的牵伴。

《牵伴》灵感源自淑君和雪莉的个人经历，探索母女关系中既温柔又艰难的时刻，描绘她们在时间的流转中所经历的挑战与成长，如何在相互依赖与个人独立之间寻找到平衡。通过这段紧密相连的关系，母女俩在爱与牺牲、独立与相伴之间不断拉锯，最终孕育出一种独特且深沉的情感联接，成为永恒的牵伴。

Work 2: The Last Shaman 最后的萨满

A dance theatre piece that delves into the life of the last shaman of the Lotud tribe in Sabah Malaysia. Based on stories through oral tradition and dance from remaining population of the tribe, the piece is told by the very last priestess who is witnessing her own funeral rites on her deathbed. Her spirit is torn between leaving the mortal plane by ascending into the mystic peaks of Kota Kinabalu mountains, or by staying alive just to preserve the existence of their culture. We see her reflect through dance, re-enactments of her life and song, fighting to stay close to her family of converts while also clinging to her own faith. How can she keep the traditions alive? Or is extinction by ascension inevitable?

这是一部单人舞蹈剧场作品，深入探讨马来西亚沙巴Lotud族最后一位萨满的生活。作品基于该部落剩余人口通过口述和舞蹈传承下来的故事，讲述了最后一位女祭司在临终时亲眼见证自己的葬礼仪式。她的灵魂在生死之间挣扎，徘徊于是否升入神秘的Kinabalu山巅，或是选择留在人世，只为守护族群文化的延续。作品通过舞蹈与叙述重现她一生的片段和她在仪式中的颂唱，展现她与转信的家人之间深厚的联结，同时坚守她的信仰。她如何才能让传统得以延续？还是说，她的离世注定带来Lotud文化的灭绝？
